MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings call 17-yo Mumbai talent Ayush Mhatre for IPL trials

The invitation for trials by CSK adds significant value to Mhatre’s budding career, opening doors to high-level training and mentorship.

As the IPL 2025 auction approaches, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are eyeing promising Mumbai batsman Ayush Mhatre. Just 17 years old, Mhatre’s stellar performance in recent First-Class matches has drawn the attention of none other than former CSK captain MS Dhoni. The young opener is now set to attend selection trials for CSK at the CSK High-Performance Centre in Navalur during a break between Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches.

Strong First-Class Debut by Ayush Mhatre

Ayush Mhatre’s First-Class debut this season has quickly earned him respect in domestic cricket circles. Making a notable impression, he scored 321 runs over five matches, maintaining an average of 35.66 with one century and one fifty. His standout moment came in his third match, where he amassed an impressive 176 against Maharashtra at the MCA ground in Mumbai.

With such a promising start, Mhatre has shown skill, confidence, and the ability to play long innings, qualities that have not only caught CSK’s interest but also MS Dhoni’s attention—a rare endorsement for a young player.

CSK Invites Ayush Mhatre for trials ahead of IPL 2025

CSK’s keen interest in Ayush Mhatre led the franchise to formally request his attendance at their selection trials. CSK MD & CEO Kasi Viswanathan sent an email to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) secretary Abhay Hadap, asking for permission for Mhatre to attend the trials. Scheduled at the CSK High-Performance Centre, the trials fall in a critical period just before the 2025 IPL auction in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.

Given that Mhatre has also been selected as part of Mumbai’s 28-member probables for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, he will use a six-day break between the Ranji Trophy’s fifth round and the start of the T20 tournament to attend CSK’s trials.

CSK’s Strategic move ahead of 2025 IPL Auction

With an eye on building a balanced squad for the 2025 season, CSK’s interest in Ayush Mhatre aligns with the team’s strategic approach of nurturing young talent and identifying future match-winners. CSK scouts are particularly impressed by Mhatre’s strong technique and temperament, key attributes for an IPL player who may face varied international and domestic opponents.

Mhatre’s opportunity to potentially join CSK will provide him not only exposure to one of the IPL’s most successful franchises but also to learn from Dhoni’s leadership ethos and tactical acumen, if selected.

Bright Future ahead for Ayush Mhatre

The invitation for trials by CSK adds significant value to Mhatre’s budding career, opening doors to high-level training and mentorship. Whether he makes the final squad or not, Mhatre’s selection for trials serves as a promising step forward in his cricket journey.
