India’s skipper equalled the Kiwi’s record in the second over of the first innings. He cleared the long leg for a huge six. The ball by Pat Cummins was overpitched and on the pads as Rohit picked it up and whipped it over Josh Hazlewood for a maximum.
Rohit followed the six with a four in the same over, before getting back to the pavilion in the next over. Nathan Ellis caught him over the leg side on 11 off Josh Hazlewood’s bowling.
Before coming into the field today, Indian captain Rohit Sharma was just two sixes away from becoming the batter with the most sixes in the history of T20I cricket. But now both Martin Guptill of New Zealand and Rohit Sharma are on the top of the list with a total of 172 sixes.
Former England captain Eoin Morgan (120), Australian captain Aaron Finch (117), and others like Chris Gayle (124), are in third, fourth, and fifth place, respectively.
Rohit Sharma will now have a chance to overtake Guptill in the next match of the T20 series vs Australia. The second T20I match of the series will be played at Vidarbha Cricket Association Ground in Nagpur on Friday.
Rohit has 3631 runs in 137 T20I games against his name, which is the highest in men’s cricket.
Earlier, Australia won the toss and opted to bowl ibn Mohali. India picked Dinesh Karthik over Rishabh Pant and the hosts opted against rushing Jasprit Bumrah back into action.
Aaron Finch also confirmed that Cam Green will open the batting along with him for Australia. While maverick batter Tim David got his much-awaited debut for Aussies.
