Mitchell Starc says his phone blew up with messages after historic Rs 24.75 crore bid

Starc had set his base price at 2 crore and was finally picked up for the record-breaking sum after a bidding war between multiple teams.

Mitchell Starc, the most expensive player in IPL history, has shared his honest reaction to being sold for a whopping Rs 24.75 crore. Talking about how he wasn’t planning to watch the IPL 2024 auction, Starc revealed that a turn of events had him sitting in front of the TV alone while his wife, Alyssa Healy, is currently on tour in India.

While talking to the Willow Talk podcast, Mitchell Starc was asked what was going through his head when the bid was going through the roof.

“I planned not to watch it. I didn’t want to,” said Starc, expressing his desire to not watch himself go under the hammer.

However, a sudden turn of events led the fast bowler to sit in front of his TV and watch the bids go up and up. Starc mentioned that a storm outside forced him to stay inside as his plan to walk his dogs got squashed, and he ended up watching it all.

The left-arm pacer revealed that his phone was blowing up with messages. He revealed that his wife Alyssa was keeping him updated throughout the bidding war, as the coverage in Australia was a little bit behind.

He also revealed that Daniel Vettori, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s head coach and Australian bowling coach, was also messaging him constantly.

Once it was all done, Starc said his response to what had happened was, “Holy cr*p.”.

Jason Gillespie on why Mitchell Starc deserves the big bucks

While Jason Gillespie criticised the move to pick Cummins for a massive sum (Rs 20.5 crore) , he backed Mitchell Starc going for big bucks.

“I think it just highlights how important teams value left-arm fast bowling and left-arm swing bowling at pace,” Gillespie said.

“I think he’s a great buy. It’s a lot of money; we all acknowledge that, but the IPL is a very rich tournament. I’m absolutely delighted for Mitch,” the former pacer concluded.
