Australian cricket legend Mike Hussey expressed pride in Usman Khawaja for taking a bold stance in support of humanitarian causes, despite facing restrictions on displaying his views during the ongoing Middle East conflict. Khawaja aimed to feature symbols of peace on his gear during the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan.
The star opener had planned to include images of a dove with an olive branch and a reference to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on his boots and bat. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) intervened, charging Khawaja for wearing a black armband during the first Test in Perth.
In the lead-up to the Perth Test, Khawaja had inscribed “All lives are equal” and “Freedom is a human right” on his boots. However, he was cautioned against displaying these messages, leading him to tape over the inscriptions.

Despite the challenges, Khawaja and Cricket Australia collaborated with the ICC to find a way for the batsman to express his support without causing division. Mike Hussey, Khawaja’s former teammate, commended his courage in voicing his beliefs.
“I think his real authentic self is coming out – this is who Uzzy is,” said Mike Hussey. “He’s very passionate in his beliefs, his morals, and his values, and he’s not afraid to put them out there. I’m quite proud of him actually. He’s got to follow the rules set by the ICC, but he certainly is sticking true to what he believes in.”
Usman Khawaja, expressing frustration with the ICC’s inconsistent enforcement of rules, posted images of other international cricketers displaying messages on their bats on Instagram. Despite the challenges, Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley supported Khawaja’s application to the ICC, emphasizing the universally recognized symbol of peace represented by the dove.
Australia captain Pat Cummins highlighted the symbolic nature of Khawaja’s chosen images, describing the dove as “pretty vanilla” and drawing parallels with teammate Marnus Labuschagne’s eagle, representing a Bible verse.
Usma Khawaja commitment to his values and the effort to find a non-partisan way to express them reflects a broader conversation on individual expression within the framework of cricket regulations.
