The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) on Sunday “unreservedly apologised” to the Australian team after its few members allegedly abused several visiting players in the Lord’s Long Room following Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal on the fifth day of the second Ashes Test.

When the players walked through the Long Room, Australian opener Usman Khawaja was seen stopping and confronting an MCC member. He was pulled back by security guards. Warner could also been seen making a comment to some of the members. The booing continued as the Australian players climbed the stairs.

After Cricket Australia demanded a probe into the heated incident, the MCC suspended three members who were part of the confrontation and said they will not be permitted back until an investigation takes place.

“The Long Room is unique in world cricket and the great privilege of players passing through the Pavilion is very special. After this morning’s play, emotions were running high, and words were unfortunately exchanged with some of the Australian team, by a small number of members,” the MCC said in a statement.

Usman Khawaja, the opening batsman for Australia, criticised the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) players for using “abusive language” as they were walking to the pavilion following the morning session.

“The crowd is great, particularly the members are great, and some of the stuff that was coming out of the members’ mouths is really disappointing and I wasn’t just going stand by and cop it. So I just talked to a few of them,” Khawaja told Channel 9.

“A few of them were throwing out some pretty big allegations and I just called them up on it and they kept going, and I was like, well, this is your membership here. So I’m just pointing them out. But it’s pretty disrespectful, to be honest. I just expect a lot better from the members,” he added.
