Matthew Wade prioritises domestic cricket over IPL, set to miss Gujarat Titans’ season opener

In the last match for Tasmania, Matthew Wade scored 32 & 5 against Victoria, this March.

Australia wicket-keeper batsman, and Gujarat Titans’ key member Matthew Wade is all set to miss the start of the IPL 2024, so that he could appear in the Sheffield Shield final for Tasmania, as per a report in ESPNCricinfo. The domestic side is assured of a place in the final, and would like to win their first title since 2012-13.

The final of the tournament is scheduled to take place from March 21-25, while GT play their first game against Mumbai Indians on March 25 only. They play Chennai Super Kings on March 27. So at max, Wade might miss out on two matches for the franchise. They play their third encounter against SRH on March 31.

“He’s spoken with his IPL franchise and they’re happy to allow him to stay here, which probably equates to him potentially missing their first game,” Tasmania head coach Jeff Vaughan said. “We feel very fortunate to have someone of Matt’s ilk coming back into our group, and his experience and his performances at the back end of our season.”

Wade spent around 10 years with Victoria, and returned to Tasmania in 2017-18, and was also part of the squad when the side lost the Sheffield Shield final to Queensland.
