Major shuffle in ICC rankings, Chamari Athapaththu is world’s best batter

The latest women's ODI rankings are out, with Sri Lankan opener Chamari Athapaththu nailing the top spot as she edged past England's Natalie Sciver-Brunt, who now finds herself on second spot.

Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu shot up to the top of the ICC women’s ODI rankings for batters after her improbable 195* against South Africa. She became the first woman from Sri Lanka to top the ODI rankings last year and has thus regained her top spot once again.

Athapaththu has displaced England’s Natalie Sciver-Brunt, who now has 764 points. Athapaththu’s unbeaten 195 – the third-highest score in women’s ODIs – spearheaded Sri Lanka’s chase of a mammoth 302-run target, the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history. This knock not only secured a series-leveling win for Sri Lanka but also propelled Athapaththu to her career-best rating of 773 rating points in the batting rankings.

South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, despite her valiant effort with back-to-back centuries, including a career-high 184* in the losing cause, found some consolation with a jump to the number three position in the batting rankings.

India’s Smriti Mandhana, however, slipped one position to the fifth spot with 696 ranking points. Meanwhile, India captain Harmanpreet Kaur holds her spot on ninth spot with 639 points. Notably, India women’s cricket team has played a single ODI game since January 02.
