LPL bigger than IPL? Colombo Strikers pays Matheesha Pathirana Rs 80 lakh more than CSK in auction

Pathirana was CSK's best bowler and gave tough competition to Jasprit Bumrah as the best middle and death overs bowler in IPL 2024.

It’s a good time to be Matheesha Pathirana! After a blockbuster performance for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2024 season, the pacer has raked in Rs 1 crore ($120000) in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024 auction, making him the most expensive player in the league’s 4-year history.

Matheesha Pathirana goes big in LPL 2024 auction

Despite performing well for CSK in IPL 2024, claiming 13 wickets with an economy of 7.68 and taking a wicket every 10th ball he bowled in the 6 matches, Pathirana has been getting just Rs 20 lakh for his services. However, in the LPL auction, the Colombo Strikers went all guns blazing for the unorthodox pacer, paying them Rs 80 lakh more than the cash-rich IPL franchise.

After a bidding war that started with a base price of $50000 (Rs 41.65 lakh), Dambulla Aura started the bid, and then Galle Marvels and Colombo Strikers joined in. Ultimately, Matheesha Pathirana went to the Strikers for $120000, making him the most expensive pick in LPL’s history.
