India's T20I squad announcement Live: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi selected; Shreyas Iyer named new T20I captain

For the Asian Games 2026, which will be played in Sept-Oct later this month, India have named a strong 15-member squad. 
It is almost the same squad that is selected for the IRE and ENG T20Is, wtih no Prince Yadav and Bumrah replacing Mohammed Siraj.

Suryakumar Yadav's form just wasn't there. He went through the entire 2025 without a single half-century for India despite leading across various bilaterals and an Asia Cup win. He showed form in the early part of 2026 but everything died down afterwards. The IPL 2026 was the final nail in the coffin, it seems. 

Meanwhile, Leading Punjab Kings in his debut season, Shreyas Iyer smashed 604 runs across 17 innings at a strike rate of 175.07 and average of 50.33. This season he’s added 498 runs at 168.81 strike rate and 55.33 average and also hit his first-ever IPL hundred.

There’s talk that the BCCI might push 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi up the ladder pretty quickly.
After his wild IPL 2026 run where he bagged the Orange Cap, selectors have reportedly shortlisted him for the two-match T20I series vs Ireland in Belfast from June 26, 2026. A few board officials and ex-chief selectors are said to be backing him for early inclusion.

If he gets the nod, he'll go past Sachin Tendulkar as India’s youngest-ever male international. His numbers do the talking: 776 runs at an unbelievable SR of around 230 in IPL 2026, 521 of those runs in the Powerplay alone. With India looking to refresh the T20I squad under Shreyas Iyer, he is an exciting option for the Ireland series, where India can rest regular openers. 

Following teams will be picked in today's meeting:  

• Ireland Series  - 2 T20Is (June 26-28)
• England Series  - 5 T20Is (July 1-11)
• Asian Games in Japan  - (September 24 to October 3)
• SL A Series  - 2 Unofficial Tests - (June 25-July 5)

The biggest news from the ensuing press conference could be the elevation of Shreyas Iyer in the T20I squad. From not being in the T20 World Cup squad, the PBKS star batter is likely to be named as India's new T20I captain, replacing under-performing Suryakumar Yadav. 

There has been a huge debate on social media and in cricketing circles about Suryakumar Yadav's potential sacking. He had a horrible IPL 2026 as well, where he could've redeemed himself. Nonetheless, the BCCI has a like-for-like captain-batter in Iyer, who has been one of the most consistent batters and leaders in the IPL.
