IND vs AFG Test, Day 2 Stumps: Manav Suthar stars with 3/21 as Afghanistan close day at 113/5

Afghanistan closed the day at 113/5, trailing by 451 runs. And it's another day of India's dominance. Shubman Gill ended up with 126, while Rishabh Pant (81) and Washington Sundar scored a half-century each, as India declared at 564/8. Manav Suthar made an excellent debut with 3/21 on Day 2. Afghanistan had a poor start with Suthar taking his first Test wicket in his first over, removing Abdul Malik. Sediqullah Atal followed as he was cleaned up by Prasidh Krishna. Prasidh struck again to remove Hashamtullah Shahidi, while Suthar closed the day with Afsar Zazai's wicket.

Manav Suthar is called back and he delivers another wicket, his third on debut. Suthar bowled a shortish delivery that turned and as Afsar Zazai tried to pull, the ball took a top edge for Suthar to take an easy catch. Afghanistan end the day at 113/5.

About 15 minutes left in Day 2, with Rahmat Shah and Afsar Zazai looking to close the day unbeaten. Indian bowling attack has been relentless with an aggressive fielding setup. Afghanistan 105/4, trailing by 459 runs.

A huge LBW appeal, and the umpire raises his finger. Hashmatullah Shahidi consults his partner, Rahmat Shah, before opting for a review. He was expecting a short delivery after the previous full ball, but the Afghan captain was caught flat-footed in his crease. Prasidh Krishna fired in a length ball angling into middle and off stump, completely beating Shahidi's attempt to clip it away and striking him squarely on the front pad. Ball-tracking confirmed the on-field decision with three reds, sending Shahidi back to the pavilion for 20 off 48 balls and costing Afghanistan both their skipper and a review.

Manav Suthar takes a break. He bowled 13 overs with 2 wickets for 20 runs. He made an immediate impact by striking in his very first over, dismissing Abdul Malik after inducing a top-edge from a poorly executed sweep, and later broke Rahmanullah Gurbaz's resistance by drawing a sharp outside edge that was safely caught low at second slip. Throughout his spell, Suthar maintained relentless pressure on the Afghan batters with pinpoint accuracy, consistently extracting sharp grip, extra bounce, and turn from the pitch to repeatedly beat the outside edge.

Afghanistan have adopted a heavily defensive survival strategy, adding 19 runs in the last five overs as they crept from 63/3 to 82/3. Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah have struggled to rotate the strike against the stifling spin duo of Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav, absorbing a massive 30 dot balls during this grinding phase. With singles nearly impossible to come by, the pair has relied entirely on sporadic boundaries to keep the scoreboard moving, highlighted by a lucky break in the 25th over when Shahidi survived a dropped catch off Kuldeep that trickled away for four. When pace was reintroduced, Mohammed Siraj maintained the relentless pressure, conceding only a single wide in the 27th over to cap off a gruelling period where the Afghan batters were purely focused on holding their ground against the Indian attack.

India burn a review as they go upstairs to check for an LBW. While it looked like the batter had middled the delivery, UltraEdge shows a spike when the ball passes the pad, bat. Since the 3rd umpire has no conclusive evidence, the onfield decision of not out stays.

It has taken 17 balls for Afghanistan captain Hashmat Shahidi to get off the mark. Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav have choked the Afghanistan batters completely from both ends. A little over an hour of play left on Day 2. An over later, Hashmat survives as he is put down by KL Rahul in the slips after edging one off Kuldeep Yadav. 
AFG are 69/3 and trail by 495 runs

Sai Sudharsan takes a good low catch at the 2nd slip as Manav Suthar gets his second wicket. Rahmanullah Gurbaz departs after scoring just 12 runs as Afghanistan lose their third wicket. The debutant's figures now read 2/8 from 7.2 overs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah have managed to steady the ship for Afghanistan, slowly building a partnership while navigating cautiously against Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav.

Manav Suthar has kept the Afghanistan batters on their toes and so far boasts of outstanding figures of 1/7 from his 5 overs. Gurbaz and Atal are trying their best to hold the fort for the visitors. India have now deployed spin from both the ends.

AFG are 42/2

The third and final session of play on Day 3 is underway in New Chandigarh. India will be eyeing to take as many wickets as they can in this gruelling 2-hour session. Meanwhile, the onus will be on Atal and Gurbaz to hold the fort for Afghanistan and survive the final session.

Manav Suthar gets off to a dream start on his Test debut as he takes just four deliveries to bag his first wicket. Abdul Malik attempts a sweep, but gets a top-edge and gets caught out by Mohammed Siraj, who avoids a collision with KL Rahul. India strike right before Tea. At Tea, Afghanistan have reached 28/1.

Out of the 6 Tests that Prasidh Krishna has played so far in his career, this is the first time the Karnataka bowler is playing a Test in India! He has played 3 games in England, two in South Africa and one in Australia so far.

Abdul Malik and Sediqullah Atal are out in the middle to commence Afghanistan's 1st innings. All eyes will be on Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, who will be expected to start with the ball for India. The hosts will be eyeing early wickets, given that they have put in Afghanistan to bat just before Tea. So, the batters will have to bat for a few overs, then take a 20-minute break, and then return to action.

Shortly after Washington Sundar got to his half-century, Shubman Gill has decided to declare the first innings after scoring 564/8. The declaration comes just 8 minutes before Tea on Day 2. Afghanistan trail India by 565 runs. 564/8 by India is the second-highest total against Afghanistan in Tests after Zimbabwe’s 586 at Bulawayo in 2024. Saleem Saifi leads the AFG side off the field holding the ball above his head, having finished with figures of 6/140.

Washington Sundar becomes the 5th Indian batter to score a half-centuy in this one-off Test and he gets to it in style with a boundary. He has scored five fours and one six so far. 
India are 564/8

During the lunch break on Day 2 of the one-off Test against Afghanistan, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Gurnoor Brar - both stars who are a part of the ODI squad - were seen training with the white-ball. NKR is already a regular in white-ball formats for India, while Brar has earned his maiden call-up. The three-match ODI series against AFG will commence shortly after the conclusion of the one-off Test.

Mohammed Siraj's cameo of 22 off 12 balls comes to an end as Saleem bags his sixth wicket. The tailender attempts a big heave, but gets his middle-stump uprooted. India have lost their 8th wicket.

Saleem Safi bags a five-wicket haul as Manav Suthar becomes his fifth victim. The debutant (28 off 41) knicks an outside edge to the keeper Afsar Zazai, who takes an easy catch. This is the first five-wicket haul for the Afghanistan pacer. He is also the sixth Afghan bowler to take a fifer in Test cricket.

Second session starts and with a bang for India

India have come out attacking after lunch. Shahidi started, but MAnav Suthar smacked a six over his head for his first Test maximum, showing clear intent. Washington Sundar then punched Omarzai through cover for four on the rise. After a morning where Afghanistan took three wickets, India’s lower order hit back.

Now, Suthar has advanced down the track to hit a beautiful six somewhat inside out for another six! Great intentions here by the debutant.

Lunch, Day 2 - India score 107 runs but lost Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel 

So, India go at Lunch with 475/6 on board, as Afghanistan would be quite happy after what panned out in last two hours. Yes, India are ever-so-close to the 500-mark but now only have a total of four wickets in hand. Manav Suthar and Washington Sundar will resume the innings after the Lunch break.

Afghanistan could've had more wickets had they been smarter with their DRS calls. Gill and Pant were out in the same over but AFG didn't opt for reviews. Nonetheless, Gill's didn't add much to his overnight score as he fell to Saleem Safi with an outside edge. Jurel and Pant added 36 runs before Jurel had a brainfade moment, where he left an incoming delivery. Pant soon got out after running out of patience against offie Hashmatullah Shahidi.

Rishabh Pant - 81 off 121 - caught off Shahidi 

Rishabh Pant's patience runs out as he gets caught while attempting a slog. After relentless pace-bowling, captain Shahidi brought himself in against the two lefties.

He tossed up a flighted delivery to Pant. Pant tried to step down and smack it, but the ball turned a bit more than expected. He mishit it off the bottom of the bat, so instead of clearing the field, it went straight up in the air.

Pant knew right away it wasn’t going for six. Azmatullah Omarzai, who was at deep mid-off, came forward, settled under it, and took a comfortable catch. Caught Omarzai, bowled Shahidi. Pant out for 81. Afghanistan take third wicket in the morning.

A bad leave from Jurel and Saleem Safi gets his fourth

Jurel was looking quite good up until that point. However, Safi bowled a length ball just outside off stump that nipped back in sharply. Jurel misread it. He thought it would miss off stump, so he left it.

But the ball curved back in and crashed into the stumps. Judgement error from Jurel. Good bowling from Safi – that “nip-backer” did him. He walks for 19 off 20. Washington Sundar enters the crease and he edges his first ball for a four as well.

India are 440/4 after 100 overs

Dhruv Jurel has looked solid ever since he has come in. There will be eyeballs on him, with him playing as a specialist batter in the team ahead of someone like Nitish Kumar Reddy. He has smashed three boundaries as India complete 100 overs. Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant is closing on his 9th Test hundred slowly but steadily. 

Shubman Gill - 126 off 177 - caught behind off Saleem

After some frustrating decisions by Afghanistan, India's luck runs out as Shubman Gill falls just before the drinks break on Day 2. He could've gone for a daddy hundred but has edged off Saleem, who has taken his third wicket. Gill and Pant's parternship ends at 169. 

Safi hit back of a length with extra bounce and away movement. Gill stood tall, tried to punch off-side, got a thick outside edge. Zazai took a simple catch behind stumps. Meanwhile, Dhruv Jurel starts his innings with a great shot for a four.

Shubman Gill is in complete control during recent overs. He started by defending Omarzai, then played it late with an open face to third man for four, taking India past 400.

Safi came on next and Gill immediately took charge. He blocked a good length ball, then creamed a full drive back past the bowler who got fingertips but couldn’t stop it. After Pant rotated strike for a single, Gill finished the over with two more boundaries. First he pulled a short ball backward of square, then drove another full ball straight.

😳 Afghanistan does it again

What have you done, Afghanistan? It is different if you go upstairs, but DRS go against you. However, Hashmatullah Shahidi hasn't gone for DRS review when he needed to. Yesterday, it happened when KL Rahul nicked one in the morning session. 

Now, Gill gets a lucky break as Azmatullah Omarzai brings one back into Gill, who misses the ball altogether and is trapped in front. Afghani players appealed, but Shahidi didn't go upstairs. They thought there might've been some contact of the bat but as it turns out, there wasn't. REPLAYS SHOWED THREE REDS🚨.

Meanwhile, Pant is now looking to counter attack against the new ball that is doing some talking off the pitch here. India get ten runs from the 90th over.

Well, that is interesting! Afghanistan take the second new ball during the 87th over. 

After Rishabh Pant smashes Omarzai for a boundary, Afghanistan go to the umpire for the second new ball. And instantly it did something special, with the bowlers finding some lateral movement.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are ready. The two stars have entered the field, as the Indian captain will take the strike since he took a single on the last ball of Day 1. Meanwhile, the Afghanistan players were in a team huddle, with Rahmat Shah sharing a few words of encouragement. 

Pacer Ziaur Rahman will start the proceedings today, and he starts it with a decent ball that came in a bit. Gill plays a front-foot defence. However, a gentle push towards mid-wicket means the first two runs of the day!

India had an utterly dominating third session yesterday, where they plundered 159 runs at 4.54. In total, the 368 runs scored were the fourth-most on Day 1 of a Test match in India ever. So, that's some kind of a record. Shubman Gill's side can go for further records if the Afghani bowlers continue to bowl at ordinary lengths. The morning session will be key for them.
