IND vs AFG 1st ODI: Gill's 84 takes India to easy win in Dharamsala

That is it. Would you believe it. Just in the last over, we were talking about, if Gill would get to his ton; and the very next one, Rahul ends the proceedings with two fours. Gill left stranded on 84 from 66, but he would still be a happy man. Well done, India. They have won by 7 wickets, taken 1-0 lead.

KL Rahul gets a six and a four in the Zia over. Now the only question is, if Gill will get a 100 tonight? Ah, maybe not. Rahul smashes another boundary, as 14 runs come from the first three deliveries. A six over covers to end the over, 20 runs come here. IND 182/3 in 22.

Rashid Khan completes hs 5-over spell with 1/37. This match looks done and dusted. But all should be gearing up for Shubman's ton. He has been rock solid today, batting on 75.

Last roll of the dice here from Afghanistan, and Azmat comes back into the attack. Slower ones, is the way to go forward. Meanwhile, Gill is slowly approaching his ton, into his 70s now. IND 153/3 in 19 overs.

Boundaries are coming thick and fast.... Oh, and just as we say this, Shreyas Iyer has played one straight into the hands of mid on fielder. Out for 12 from 15, and Shreyas must be livid with himself. IND 143/3 in 18 overs.

Afghanistan get Zia back into the attack, and now it is just about delaying the inevitable. The bowler is using a lot more slower ones. But Gill and Iyer are in total control for now. IND 135/2 in 16 overs.

Iyer has come at a time when there isn't much to do. But still, it would be great for him, if he can remain unbeaten here. Saleem has been bowling well, but without much reward. Afghanistan don't have any hopes left in this match. IND 125/2 in 14 overs.

Kishan steps out to Rashid Khan and it goes wrong for him. The leggie bowled a googly and it beat Kishan's outside edge to hit the off stump. Afghanistan are alive in the game.

Although Gill got chances early, he's made Afghanistani's pay. A fifty of just 37 balls for the Indian captain. The chase is in control.

Ishan has made his intentions very clear and gets a four on the very first delivery of Mohammad Nabi. Again, goes back into the crease, deploys the same pull and this time gets a six. Another good over for India comes to an end. It is 84/1 in 10 overs.

After having missed the Test match, Rashid is back for the ODIs, and comes for his first over here. He needs to produce magic. Ishan just rocks back into the crease and pulls a short one for a four. He is a dangerous batter. IND 73/1 in 9 overs.

With no Virat Kohli for this series, due to an injury, Ishan Kishan has come in at the fall of a wicket. There was some speculation that KL Rahul could bat at no.3, but that is far from truth. 9 runs come from the Saleem over now, as IND move to 56/1 in 7 overs.

Oh god, what are you doing Shubman Gill. Rohit Sharma nudges one for a single, on the bowling of Ghazafar, runs down the wicket, but is sent back by Shubman. He is well out of his crease, out for 16. IND 47/1 in 6 overs.

This is turning out to be great for the batters, but pacers are getting the odd ball to bounce. Now Saleem Saifi comes into the attack, and is bowling at rapid pace. India don't need to do anything stupid; they have ample of time. Gill tries to go for a pull, edges, and the ball goes behind the keeper, who covers a lot of ground, but couldn't get to the ball.

Allah Ghazanfar comes into the attack in the 4th over itself. And he bowls a brilliant carrom delivery. Gill misses it, and there is an appeal for a caught behind. The fielding side looks confident, but Ultraedge shows, there is no edge. IND 34/0 in 4 overs.

Rohit pulls Zia for a big one this time around, as the ball sails over the boundary. He brings up 16000 runs as an opener in international cricket. What a player for world cricket he has been. Tries to go for another in the over, mistimes, but still gets a four. IND 29/0 in 3 overs.

Zia ur Rahman into the attack, and look, Rohit is fine. He just rocks on to the backfoot, and cracks the ball through point for a four. And now, Shubman presents the full face of the bat, and the ball races through covers for four. Add another in the over, and India are away in style . Afghanistan in need of wickets. IND 19/0 in 2 overs.

Azmat starts the proceedings for Afghanistan, and it is not a good one. The ball is swining a great deal, and he is not able to control it. Starts with four wides, then a no ball, and then a wide. 7 runs on the board, and none by the batters. Ah, Rohit seems to have been hit by a rising ball. The batter goes for the pull, misses, and is hit on the wrist. IND 8/0 in 1 over.

Gurnoor Brar closes the innings with two wickets, and he finishes his debut match with superb figures of 3/27. Gurbaz was the only shinning light for Afghanistan as he made 102 out of Afghanistan's 194. No other Afghani batter made more than 28 runs, as India would back themselves to chase the target in 25 overs. The required run rate will be 7.8.

Harsh Dubey finishes his debut with 3/47 in 5 overs! 

Promising debut for Dubey on a pitch that is more suited for batting. The left-arm spinner gets three wickets, but the last one really should go towards Shubman Gill as he took a blinder at first slip! After getting Omarzai, he sent back another Afghani batter on the back of a stupendous catch by the Indian captain. 

Harsh Dubey tossed the ball up slower and outside off-stump, tempting Ghazanfar who had just come to the crease.
Ghazanfar backed away and tried to pull it, but the ball was too slow and turning away, so he only managed a thick top edge off his bat.

The ball flew fast to the left of first slip where Gill was positioned. Gill reacted instantly, stretched out his left hand one-handed, and plucked the ball out of the air while diving and rolling on the ground to make sure it didn’t pop out. It was a reflex catch under pressure and he held on clean.

Harsh Dubey is having an exciting debut! He has gone for runs but is continuing to pick up wickets at crucial times. After getting well-set Shahidi, he gets a timely, and perhaps, more crucial wicket of Azmatullah Omarzai! 

Omarzai hit Dubey for three sixes in his innings, but the left-arm spinner had the last laugh. Harsh Dubey bowled quicker and read Azmatullah Omarzai’s charge. Omarzai swung across the line, missed, and got stranded down the track. Ishan Kishan whipped the bails off instantly. Stumped for 26, Afghanistan is collapsing fast.

Afghanistan are 165/5 after 20 overs, and have five overs remaining. Azmatullah Omarzai has looked productive, having smashed 20* off 14. 

Kudos to Gill for giving a fourth over to Nitish Kumar Reddy. Meanwhile, Prasidh, Gurnoor and Arshdeep each have one over left. Perhaps Nitish will also complete his quota of 5 overs! 

After a superb 116-run partnership in just 66 balls between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hashmatullah Shahidi, India have arrived back in the game again. 

Gurbaz, after his splendid ton, was yorked by Nitish Kumar Reddy, who bagged the prized wicket. In the very next over, Shahidi squandered his start and went for a slog sweep only to get caught on the boundary ropes. Harsh Dubey gets his maiden ODI wicket! A moment to cherish for the young lad.

Magnificent century by Gurbaz, who played like a one-man army against India. Out of 142 runs that Afghanistan scored, he made 102. He got there in just 48 balls, smashing the record for scoring the fastest ODI century for his country.

Afghanistan took 45 balls to score their first 50 runs. Now, they have made their next 50 in just 25 balls. The reason is Rahmanullah Gurbaz! 

The Afghani maestro has let loose here as he smashes 21 runs off a Washington Sundar over. Perfect matchup for him and he makes sure to punish the offie, as he moves to 89 off 39. Afghanistan are 110/3 after 12 as Gill is forced to bring in Arshdeep Singh. 

After getting 35/3 in first six overs, Afghanistan have pushed the Indian bowlers with superb counter attack. Rahmanullah Gurbaz is at the center of attention as he completes his 50 in just 25 balls. 
Harsh Dubey's debut hasn't been great so far as he has leaked 23 runs in first eight balls. Prasidh Krishna has also gave away 18 runs in his two overs.

However, bowling the 10th over, Dubey outsmarted Gurbaz but he gets lucky as the ball lands just short of the long off fielder. Good comeback by Dubey. 

Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy are yet to bowl.

Arshdeep Singh set Rahmat Shah up with a fuller delivery that Shah drove, mistiming it high toward mid off where Shubman Gill almost held on after putting in a diving effort.

The very next ball, Arshdeep Singh bowled a back-of-a-length delivery angling across the right-handed batter, and Rahmat Shah attempted a pull shot despite there being insufficient bounce and pace in the delivery.

He failed to get on top of the ball and ended up miscuing it high in the air toward midwicket, where Harsh Dubey, the debutant, judged the catch perfectly while running backwards and completed a well-taken catch. It was an unnecessary shot from Rahmat Shah given the situation, and Afghanistan lost their third wicket with him departing for just 3 runs from 8 balls.

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi is the new batter in. Gurbaz, meanwhile, looking dangerous at 21* off 14. 

After Gurnoor, Arshdeep nailed Sediqullah with an inswinger!

Full ball, swinging back in. Sediqullah fell over trying to play it and got his line all wrong. Ball hit him right on the pads in front of middle/leg. Umpire gave it out LBW straight away. Afghanistan reviewed, but ball tracking showed it was just clipping leg stump – "umpire's call".

So India got the wicket and Afghanistan lost a review. Sediqullah gone for a 2-ball duck, Afghanistan in trouble early.

What a debut over!

Gurnoor Brar is off and running from the get-go! He has taken a wicket in his first over itself, rushing Ibrahim Zadran who went for a hoick towards the leg side but was caught at mid-off by Shubman Gill. A fantastic and heartening duo doing it for India as Gill and Brar have played a lot of cricket together. 

Brar was a tad bit fuller in his first over and when he went slightly back, he got a wicket. On the previous ball, the youngster clocked 148 kmph! So, exciting times ahead for India with Gurnoor!

Well, it's the time now! After the two national anthems, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran are ready for Afghanistan, as they face Arshdeep Singh, who starts for India. Just one slip (KL Rahul) in place, as Ishan Kishan takes the glove.

And.. an interesting move by Gurbaz as he steps out and has a hoick with an aggressive intent. The ball misses everybody as he gets a run for a wide on the very next ball. Some movement on offer for the left-armer here. 

Exciting times ahead. Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey get their international debut caps after missing out from a spot in India's Test XI last week. With an overcast weather and superb bowling conditions, both Brar and Dubey will love to have a crack at Afghanistan today.

It looks like India are fixing something that isn't broken. After some interesting comments by bowling coach Morne Morkel in the press conference, India were touted to chop and change KL Rahul's batting position. Despite him doing so well at No. 5/6, he has been labelled as No. 3 in Virat Kohli's absence. 

Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan is slotted at number five. One would imagine that's how they would come out during the game time as well. But it is perplexing as to why would India try to slot in Rahul up top when he has literally owned the finisher's role since 2023 now. 

Well, some interesting match updates here by India. We have two debutants in this game as Kuldeep Yadav, Prince Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal miss out on the Playing XI. 

Instead, Gurnoor Brar is making his debut alongside Harsh Dubey! Incredible moment for these two players, who recieve their caps from Shubman Gill and KL Rahul, respectively.

Finally, we have some respite and fans who stayed at the venue have something to cheer for. After almost 4 hours of waiting, we finally have an update that this match will be happening, and it will be a 25-over per-side affair. 

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill won the toss and with no surprises chose to bowl first. 

It is not an ideal day if you are a cricket fan. While the India vs Afghanistan first ODI hasn't even seen the flip of the coin, other cricket games are getting hampered as well.

As the broadcasters begin to show the recently concluded one-off Test match highlights, a new update comes. The rain continues, and the ground staff have brought in more covers to shield the ground. The wait continues.....

The rain seemed to have ease off a bit. Groundstaff are out there in their raincoats, grass squelching under their boots. Supersoppers are making laps. But... wait... it looks like rain's picking up again though. 

We are in for that frustrating period, where you just go back when you see some respite coming in! 🌧️

Well, in ideal circumstances, toss would've been done by now. The scheduled time for the flip of coin was for 1 PM IST. However, it is raining steadily right now in the stadium. From the live visuals that we saw on the broadcast, it is raining with some flow still. 

Naturally, the toss has been delayed, and it is likely that we might lose some overs as well. The fans at the venue are still waiting, soaking the rain since most of the stadium isn't covered.

Despite missing the balance of Hardik Pandya and the reliability of Virat Kohli, India holds a heavily stacked roster playing in familiar home territory. Afghanistan has the tools to cause a scare—especially if their top-order explosive batters like Rahmanullah Gurbaz get going or if moisture assists their spinners later in the game. However, India’s lethal bowling unit and robust batting depth give them the definitive edge. Who will win today's match?

The toss for the IND vs AFG 1st ODI has been delayed due to rain in Dharamshala. The surface at the HPCA stadium is still under covers. The toss was initially scheduled to take place at 1 PM IST.

It continues to rain in Dharamshala which means the start of the IND vs AFG 1st ODI at the HPCA Stadium could be delayed. While it is highly unlikely for the game to be washed out, there are chances of delays and a truncated contest.

India and Afghanistan have locked horns on four occasions previously in ODIs, in which the former have won thrice. The last time the two sides faced off, IND defeated AFG by 8 wickets. 

Dharamsala pitch will be a good wicket overall, with plenty of runs in the offing, due to shorter boundaries, and also true bounce. Spinners and pacers might get some assistance during the middle overs, but it is for the batters to make hay. The IPL 2026 saw 200 being breached 6 times in 4 matches, where it was chased down twice. So, toss would not be a major consideration. It will be a battle of the batters, whoever does better, wins the match.

As per Accuweather, there is a 55% chance of precipitation, and a 33% chance of thunderstorms over the city. But that might just be the case in the afternoon, as there is no rain predicted for the evening. So, all-in-all, there could be a delayed start, but we might get in a match, after all. Overall, the temperature remains on the lower side during the day – 24-28, while in the night it drops to a very decent 16-19.

Since taking over the reins of the 50-over format team from Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill is yet to win an ODI bilateral series. He has led India in 6 ODIs so far in which the side has lost on 4 occasions. But that is likely to change, as Afghanistan are not a world-beating unit. India should run them over despite not having Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya in the series.
