CSK vs MI, IPL 2026: Chennai hand Mumbai Indians 8-wicket thrashing

Kartik Sharma finishes off in style with a boundary as CSK complete a clinical 8-wicket win against Mumbai Indians in Chennai. Kartik (54) and Gaikwad (67) sta unbeaten as the five-time champions get their 4th win of IPL 2026. A much-needed win for the hosts and they will be very happy with the result.

20-year-old Kartik Sharma slams his maiden IPL half-century and it comes off 39 deliveries. CSK are just four runs away from a win.

CSK have reached 129/2 in 15 overs and need just 31 runs from 30 balls to win their 4th match of IPL 2026. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma are looking in good touch out in the middle.

Ruturaj Gaikwad slams his second consecutive half-century and it comes off 34 deliveries. The CSK captain is leading the charge in the run-rate and he has played a mature knock so far.

Chennai Super Kings are on the course to securing an easy win as they need almost a run a ball now. They have gone past the 100-run mark and need 53 runs off 48 balls.

CSK have managed to reach 92/2 at the end of 10 overs and need 68 runs from 60 balls to win their 4th match. Mumbai haven't managed to get a wicket after Urvil Patel's departure.

Undeterred by the loss of a couple of wickets, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is leading the team from the front in the run-chase. He has scored 32 off 18 balls. Meanwhile, Kartik Sharma survives as Will Jacks drops a tough catch on the boundary ropes off the last delivery of the 8th over.

Urvil Patel departs after getting a good start yet again as Allah Ghazanfar strikes in the final over of the powerplay. The CSK batter departs after scoring 22 runs and the hosts are 2 wickets down. CSK manage to reach 62/2 at the end of the powerplay.

Krish Bhagat gets off to a miserable start with the ball as he concedes xx runs in his first over. A six and a four from Urvil Patel provided the perfect start to the over for CSK. The hosts reach the 50-run mark with one over left in the powerplay.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has shifted gears and is dealing in boundaries as 17 runs come off Trent Boult's second over. CSK race to 30/1 in 3 overs, recovering well after losing Samson.

After being dropped in the first delivery of the over, Sanju Samson is caught behind by Ryan Rickleton in the same over. Samson departs after scoring 11 runs as MI get the first breakthrough.

Chennai Super Kings manage to get 7 runs from the first over as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson get going. But wait, what has happened? A catch is put down off Jasprit Bumrah's very first ball and Will Jacks is the man who drops a sitter. Samson survives

CSK's run-chase will depend on how well Sanju Samson performs. For the record, every time Samson has scored 30+ runs, CSK have registered a victory and when he has failed to do so, the team has lost. Can CSK register their 4th win of IPL 2026? Run-chase commences. Trent Boult with the new ball for MI.

Naman Dhir was the standout performer for the Mumbai Indians with the bat, with a gritty 57-run knock. He was the top run-getter for MI in their game against CSK. He struck 3 sixes and 4 fours, to help MI reach a face-saving total.

Mumbai read the wicket wrong here, or maybe everyone else did too. Even CSK wanted to bat first on this wicket, which could have been as disastrous. Hardik Pandya really needs to tweak something in his game to bat better. He is not making much contribution either with bat or ball. He is out for 18, after denying a single to Krish Bhagat. MI end with 159 only.

Minz gets his first IPL boundary in his 5th IPL match. Thje ball is in the slot, and he drives well. But on the very next ball, Kamboj has his wicket. Inside-egde, and he fails yet again.

Jamie Overton has struck for Chennai. Naman Dhir gets his fifty after a four and a six, and departs on the very next ball. 170 looks out of question for MI. Off cutter does the trick for CSK and Sarfaraz takes the catch.

There is an appeal against Pandya, for a caught behind. But he surviuves that call against Noor. Naman Dhir needs to take most of the strike, and Hardik should have that in mind. The wicket is double paced as well.

Such is the situation for Mumbai, that they are not able to get away inexperienced Ramakrishna Ghosh for runs. Hardik's SR is still under 100, which has been the story of the season for him.

Noor has a wicket and has gotten rid of dangerman Tilak. The batter miscues one, and it goes in the air. Gaikwad and Urvil nearly collide, but still the catch is completed. MI in further trouble.

One feels, No. 5 is a little too low for Tilak. Maybe three or four is where he should bat. But now, he should stay till the very end. Meanwhile there is an appeal for a catch, on the bowling of Noor.

The debutant Ghosh has a wicket. Tries to bounce the ball more. It looked like, Surya had already decided to go over point. He airs it, and is caught by deep cover fielder Dewald Brevis. Ten runs and a wicket from the over.

Noor comes for another over and gives away 13 runs. Surya has gotten off to a positive start and is in his 20s already. Should be his day here.

There is a change in bowling from Rutu, and his statemate Ramamkrishna Ghosh has come into the attack. The lad is well-built, has decent speed and can bat well. Let's see what he does. 7 from it only

After a drop in Noor's over, the bowler gets the wicket of Ryan Rickelton. The batter opts to go for a slog sweep, and only manages to find a fielder in the deep. Suryakumar to come in now, and he will have to deliver.

The first six overs are done and after a couple of bad overs, MI are truly away. Powerplay is done and they have managged to score 57/1.

Left-arm spinner Prashant Veer comes into the attack. And he has been hit for a couple of thumping sixes. Make it three in the over now, and the confidence might be depleted now.

The match has changed in a couple of overs here. Rickelton is dealing in boundaries, and now they are looking for a big total.

Rickelton has got his eye in, and he smashes Mukesh for a couple of sixes here. A lot more of this is needed by MI. 15 runs come from the over now.

Jacks swings the bat hard, and ends up edging it. The ball flies to third man, and he has been caught. Excellent by Chennai to start with. Just four runs in the over now.

So the match starts here and Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks start for MI. Mukesh starts proceedings with the ball. Excellent over to start with as just one run comes from it.

Hardik Pandya has won the toss and opted to bat first.. Mumbai make two changes here. Surprisingly, CSK have axed Akeal Hosein here. Questionable decision for sure.

Chennai is ready for the toss, and the surface here is good for batting again. But chasing has been the preferred choice for the skippers, so win the toss, and put the opposition into bat.

Mumbai's situation is even more precarious. Two wins from eight, ninth on the IPL 2026 Points table, and the most recent defeat to SRH, despite posting 243, exposed serious issues with the bowling attack. Hardik Pandya has now lost four of his last five games as captain, and the pressure is mounting. With Rohit Sharma unlikely to return for the clash, it won’t be easy for MI.

The batting hasn't been the problem, even though Suryakumar Yadav is out of form. Tilak Varma, Ryan Rickelton, and Will Jacks have all produced individual moments. But the bowlers haven't stopped opposition tops scoring at will, and that's what's killing them. Their prized asset, Jasprit Bumrah, hasn’t even been a shadow of himself with just 2 wickets in 8 matches. The others have leaked runs.

CSK's last fixture told a very specific story. An eight-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans, where early wickets left them chasing the game. The trajectory had been slowly improving, but Chennai have now slipped to seventh on the table with three wins from eight matches, and the issues have started to compound. 

Ayush Mhatre is ruled out with injury, MS Dhoni's prolonged absence has weakened the setup, and Ruturaj Gaikwad has had to lead from the front more often than the team would like. The good news is Sanju Samson, who has been Chennai's standout this season with two centuries already, including a 101 off 67 against MI at Wankhede in their last meeting. If anyone can lift a CSK side under pressure on a Chepauk Saturday, it's him.

Chennai Super Kings are 7th with 6 points, while Mumbai Indians are 9th with 4 points. 

The Chepauk wicket has settled into a different character this season than its old reputation suggests. The famously slow, abrasive surface has shifted, and the early IPL 2026 numbers reflect that.

The first-innings average at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in IPL 2026 has been around 200, with two of the four games at the venue this season seeing 200-plus first-innings totals. That's a clear shift from the slow grind Chepauk used to be. The pitch has evolved into a more balanced surface. Batters benefit from consistent bounce, and bowlers using variations and hard lengths can still extract something.

That said, the spin angle remains fundamental. CSK will rely heavily on their spin attack and home conditions at Chepauk to revive their playoff hopes, and Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad operating in tandem on this surface is a real problem for any opposition middle order. 

This is the IPL's most-played fixture, and it has been a Mumbai Indians-flavoured rivalry historically, though Chennai have done their share of damage along the way. Across 39 IPL meetings, MI lead 21-18 in the overall head-to-head.

In their last meeting last month, CSK thrashed MI by 103 runs at Wankhede, Chennai's biggest win against Mumbai in IPL history. In fact, CSK have won four out of their last five meetings. 

At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, MI have had a slight advantage. Out of 10 matches, MI have won six to CSK’s 4.
