CSK vs LSG, IPL 2026: Chennai manage to post narrow win, Digvesh Rathi drops crucial catches

What is even happening here. CSK are giving it up easy. Now Avesh Khan gets rid of Kartik Shama. They should be chasing down in singles from here on. Another over ends now.

This is not looking good for Chennai. The match has just changed in the last few over. On the last ball of his spell, Rathi bowls a wrong one, and Brevis misses it completely. Bowled.

It looks like sudden brakes have been put in the last 6-7 overs. Just one boundary has come in this stage. Concering for the team. They really need to get going now.

It is tricky to cut left-arm spinners and Ruturaj picks up the wrong delivery to do so. It is a full one, and the batter misses it, as the ball crashes into the stumps. Licknow pulling back things here.

Will it be the identical script from the first innings? After Inglis scored 85 from 33, things got a lot slower. Can Lucknow bowlers inflict that sort of damage? It is sill not over.

Urvil Patel is just unstoppable. He is making Digvesh Rathi very nervous. He is coming around the wicket, but is hit for a boundary over point. A six the very next delivery. And he strikes it big.

A four and a six is what Digvesh Rathi starts with. But Sanju gets too ambitious, and misses one that comes in, completely. But he seems to have done his job here. Sanju falls for 28 from 14.

If CSK manage to chase this total down, this would be their third highest. The highest is 208 vs RCB in 2012. It has been a long time since that. But Gaikwad and Samson have started well.

Prince Yadav starts from the other end, and Licknow must pick at least a couple of wickets in the PP. But some pace on the ball means, Ruturaj pulls him for a six. 15 runs come from the over.

17 runs come from the penultimate over and suddenly LSG find themselves in touching distance of the 200-run mark. Jamie Overton, who was so good in this game, leaked a lot of runs in his final over.

Himmat Singh and Shahbaz Nadeem have an enormous task at hand and it is to ensure that LSG go past the 200-run mark at the end of 20 overs. With a little over two overs left, the LSG batters will need to strike a boundary off every alternate delivery.

Lucknow Super Giants have only managed to add 40 runs in the last 5 overs as they reach 154/6 in 15 overs. Himmat Singh and Shahbaz Nadeem will be eyeing a strong finish in the death overs.

The fifty-run partnership comes up between Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh in just 3.4 overs as Josh Inglis is majorly dealing in boundaries (mostly maximums). 18 runs come from that over and Inglis moves to 48 off 16 balls.

Josh Inglis is out in the middle along with Mitchell Marsh to commence the proceedings for Lucknow Super Giants. Akeal Hosein starts with the new ball for CSK and has been brilliant in the powerplay. Can CSK get early breakthroughs? Action begins.

9 day-night matches have been held so far in IPL 2026 and none of the teams who batted first have managed to win even a single match. LSG have been asked to bat first in Chennai on Sunday afternoon. Can they buck the trend and hand an upset to CSK?

Sanju Samson has clearly enjoyed facing Lucknow’s key pace bowlers, and his numbers highlight just how dominant he has been in these matchups. Against Mohammed Shami, Samson has scored 59 runs off 32 balls at a strong strike rate of 184.4, with a remarkable 84.7% boundary percentage. He has been even more aggressive against Mohsin Khan, smashing 45 runs off 22 balls at an 204.5 strike rate. 

"Personally, I try to look for more space toward the back end of my innings and find unique ways to find gaps through the middle. Everyone’s approach is a bit different—some guys like to stay in the crease and find gaps, others like to use their feet. For me, it's about hitting those pockets and running hard. I’ve always said I’m happy to be fluid and play whatever role is required," Aiden Markram said before the game. 

"To turn it around after the first three games that we lost, it's a commendable effort from everyone. It is just that everyone is really positive. CSK's Ruturaj Gaikwad and LSG's Rishabh Pant are out in the middle for the toss in what is a must-win game for the two sides in Chennai.

"The great thing is that our bench strength has been fantastic, the backup players have stepped up and delivered. So far, so good. We take it one game at a time. The road ahead is always about the next immediate challenge. Slow and steady is the way forward," CSK assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram said before the LSG match. 

Lucknow Super Giants finally showed fight in their win over RCB and their pace attack could enjoy bowling on the red-soil Chepauk surface. But Chennai Super Kings look far more settled at the moment. CSK are on a two-match winning streak. Check out the match prediction CSK vs LSG game. 

For Lucknow, the equation is simpler. They're playing for pride, for next season's planning, and to finish the year on a positive note rather than as a complete write-off. The win over RCB shows the side still has fight in it. Marsh batting through the innings, Pant and Pooran clicking, Shami leading the bowling. It's a team capable of pulling off an upset on its day. Whether Sunday afternoon at Chepauk is that day, with the spin coming on early and the heat draining the legs, is a different question. A loss against CSK will end their playoff hopes completely. But if they win their last three, LSG will be alive in the race, mathematically. 

LSG are barely alive in the playoff race at #10 with 6 pts from 10 matches with 4 games left. Even if they win everything, LSG can reach a maximum of 14 pts. But that won't guarantee them a spot. SRH and GT are already on 14 points, while PBKS are on 13. RCB and RR both have 12 each. For LSG to reach the playoffs, they need a miracle and help from RR and PBKS both.

For Chennai, the math is fairly clear. CSK need to win at least three of their last four matches to make the playoffs. Sunday's home fixture, against the side at the bottom of the table, is exactly the kind of game they have to win to keep that math achievable. Samson in form, Gaikwad rediscovering his touch, and Hosein and Noor on a Chepauk afternoon. The home side has every advantage stacked up.

To qualify directly, a minimum of 18 points is required. CSK need at least 3 wins from 4 fixtures to reach the 16-point qualification mark (mathematical safety ceiling: 18 pts).

Lucknow’s situation is worse on the table but better in terms of momentum. Mitchell Marsh's 56-ball 111 against RCB, the fastest century by an LSG player in IPL history, ended their six-match drought. Prince Yadav picked up 3/33 in that game, including a beauty to dismiss Virat Kohli early. 

Marsh has been LSG's leading run-scorer all season, and the side leans on him at the top. Pooran, Pant and Markram have chipped in with decent knocks but haven't been consistent. With the playoff door barely cracked open, LSG need to keep winning. The bigger question is whether they can do it on a wicket nothing like Ekana.

Sitting sixth on the IPL 2026 Points Table, Chennai Super Kings have bounced back. Sanju Samson has carried the batting with 402 runs in 10 matches at an average of 57.43, and the team leans heavily on him. When Samson scores, CSK win. Ruturaj Gaikwad has also returned to form with unbeaten knocks of 74 and 67 in his last two outings. The home advantage is real. Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad on a Chepauk track in the afternoon is the kind of attack that can choke any chase.

Chepauk has had a fascinating transformation this season. The traditional slow, ultra-spin-heavy surface has shifted noticeably towards balance, though spin still matters.

The Chepauk pitch in IPL 2026 has offered a slightly better batting surface than in previous seasons, with the average first-innings score ranging between 165 and 186 depending on conditions. The first-innings average this season is around 165-170, and anything over 190 gets tricky to chase. There's some moisture under the surface, the ball comes onto the bat in the powerplay, but once it gets old, spinners get turn.

The 3:30 PM kickoff matters. An afternoon start means the surface is expected to slow down further, with decent turn and grip from the very first innings, making the middle overs a tactical fight. The black-soil surface generally provides grip and turn, particularly during afternoon games when the pitch dries under the sun. Teams batting first hold a slight advantage if the wicket slows considerably in the second innings.

For the CSK vs LSG clash on Sunday afternoon, Chepauk will use a red-soil surface, which will assist turners in the middle overs. 

This is one of the newer IPL rivalries, with the two sides having met just six times since LSG joined the league in 2022. LSG lead the head-to-head 3-2 in completed matches, with their fixture at Ekana in 2023 ending in no result. In their first meeting earlier this season, LSG got the better of CSK. Sunday is a chance for the Super Kings to even the season series and start chipping away at the overall lean.
