Sri Lanka's premier T20 competition is set for a major change, with the Lanka Premier League introducing the Impact Player rule from the 2026 season.

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) unveiled two massive changes ahead of the 2026 season during Monday’s player draft in Colombo. Teams will now be allowed to use an Impact Player during matches, while every side must also have at least one Under-23 player in the playing XI at all times, even after the substitution is made.

The two changes heavily influenced how franchises approached the draft. Team owners and coaches were not merely selecting the best available players. They were trying to solve a puzzle.

With the Impact Player rule allowing teams to substitute one member of the starting XI with a bench player who can fully participate in the game, squad balance became more important than ever. Add the Under-23 requirement to the mix, and every franchise had to carefully identify which young player could be trusted to play a meaningful role throughout the tournament.

The challenge was made tougher by a limited talent pool. Several of Sri Lanka’s leading Under-19 prospects are expected to be involved in the home series against India in July, making them unavailable for the LPL. The LPL 2026 is about to begin from July 17, while Sri Lanka’s Under-19 team will be going head-to-head against India’s Under-19 team from July 4 to 23.

What is the Impact Player rule?

As you must have noticed in the IPL, the Impact Player rule allows a team to replace one member of its starting XI with a designated substitute during the match. Unlike traditional substitutes, the incoming player can bat, bowl and field as a full member of the side. The player who is replaced takes no further part in the game.

Teams must name their substitutes before the match begins, and the replacement player can bowl a complete quota of overs irrespective of how many overs the outgoing player has already delivered.

The rule first gained prominence in the IPL and has divided opinion within cricket circles. Legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have expressed concerns that it reduces the value of genuine all-rounders by allowing teams to effectively play with an extra specialist batter or bowler.

Sri Lanka, however, believes the regulation can add another layer to the tournament while also creating opportunities for younger players. However, it makes some sense to add Impact player rule in LPL since the move will make the tournament much more high-scoring. The pitch conditions in Sri Lanka makes it tough for the batters, but with the Impact player rule, you may see more high totals, which may ultimately grab eyeballs.
