Sri Lanka cricket team star Kusal Mendis slammed a half-century off just 20 deliveries in the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh on Saturday The hosts have already taken taken a 1-0 lead in the series by the virtue of a 77-run win over the visitors in the 1st ODI. Despite Mendis’ knock, Sri Lanka are still reeling behind in the run-chase, with Bangladesh setting a 249-run target.
Mendis slams quickfire fifty
Mendis slammed 9 fours and 1 six en route to his half-century. His quickfire knock powered Sri Lanka to a great start in the run-chase after losing Pathum Nissanka early on in the innings. However, he was forced to depart in the 12th over as he was sent packing by Tanvir Islam.
Earlier in the game, Bangladesh opener Parvez Hossain Emon top-scored for the side with a 67-run knock off 69 deliveries. Towhid Hridoy managed to get to 51 runs his innings was brought to a grinding halt, thanks to a run out. Shamim Hossain (22), Jaker Ali (24) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (33) made valuable contributions towards the end of the innings to power Bangladesh to a mammoth total.
Asitha Fernando was the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka, having taken four wickets in the innings. Wanindu Hasaranga managed to take 3 wickets while Chameera and skipper Asalanka managed to get a wicket each.
After a crucial partnership between Nishan Madhushka and Mendis, the hosts lost wickets in a flurry, putting their run-chase in jeopardy.
Mendis is a veteran in the 50-over format, having amassed 4474 runs from 144 matches. He averages 34.68 in ODIs, arguably one of the best and experienced batters for Sri Lanka.
