Defending a lowly 156, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami starred with the ball and hand Kolkata Knight Riders their fourth successive loss this season. Andre Russell threatened to take the game away with a fighting 48, but the West Indian did not find much support and perished in the final over as Gujarat Titans held on to the win.
Kolkata Knight Riders got off to the worst possible start in their chase as they were reduced to 34/4, with Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson and Yash Dayal sharing the spoils. Rinku Singh, making his first appearance in IPL 2022, made his presence felt with an exciting cameo and found support from Venkatesh Iyer who was demoted to No.6.
Rashid Khan then struck in the middle overs and it was left to Andre Russell to do the impossible and guide hi team home. The West Indian survived a massive reprieve after he was caught out in the deep but Yadah Dayal was revealed to have overstepped. The mistake proved too costly as Russell took the game deep with KKR needing 12 off 5, but a fine catch on the boundary by Lockie Ferguson meant that Gujarat Titans took home the two points.
Earlier, Gujarat Titans were put in to bat and lost Shubman Gill early with Tim Southee striking early on his return. Promoting himself to No.3, Hardik Pandya led the effort with a fine 67 with cameos from Wriddhiman Saha and David Miller. However, Andre Russell and Tim Southee ensured that Gujarat did not get the final flourish with the newcomers only managing 29 of the last five overs.
