Kane Williamson sidelined, Rachin Ravindra steps in for NZ vs BAN T20 Series

Williamson, nursing a knee injury, and Jamieson, grappling with a hamstring issue, have been withdrawn from the 13-player squad.

In a surprising turn of events, New Zealand’s T20I squad faces a double setback as skipper Kane Williamson and fast bowler Kyle Jamieson are ruled out of the upcoming series against Bangladesh due to injuries. The experienced duo’s absence opens the door for young sensation Rachin Ravindra and seasoned pacer Jacob Duffy.

Williamson, nursing a knee injury, and Jamieson, grappling with a hamstring issue, have been withdrawn from the 13-player squad. The decision aims to prioritize the players’ recovery ahead of an intense Test schedule against South Africa and Australia in the coming year.

Coach Gary Stead emphasized the importance of ensuring Kane Williamson and Kylie Jamieson are in peak condition for the upcoming Test challenges. “We want both Kane and Kyle to be in the best possible place leading into the next block of Test cricket against South Africa and Australia,” said Stead.

The coaching staff, in consultation with the medical team and players, opted for a rehabilitation and conditioning period to secure the long-term fitness of the star players.

To fill the void left by the captain and key bowler, Stead expressed confidence in the capabilities of Jacob Duffy and Rachin Ravindra.

“Jacob is an experienced T20 cricketer and always brings a lot when he is part of the Black Caps environment. He’s worked very hard on his white-ball skills in recent seasons,” noted Stead.

He also praised Rachin Ravindra, highlighting the young player’s eagerness to learn and develop across all formats.

The three-match T20I series against Bangladesh is scheduled between December 27 and 31, 2023. As the Black Caps navigate these challenges, fans are eager to witness how the new additions will contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming contests.
