J&K spoil Rohit Sharma’s Ranji comeback, beat Mumbai after 10 years, move top of table

Ranji Trophy: A star-studded Mumbai team, consisting of Rohit Sharma, lost to so-called minnows J&K in their Group A fixture.

Given the big names in the Mumbai squad, no one really would have given a chance to the J&K team to win against 42-time Ranji Trophy champions. But then, Paras Dogra’s team fought their reputation well, to beat Ajinkya Rahane‘s men by five wickets on Saturday. After being set target of 205, the visitors achieved the target with five wickets in hand, to register their fourth win of the season.

J&K Beat Mumbai In Ranji Trophy

This is J&K’s only second win in the Ranji Trophy over Mumbai, while the first one came in the 2014-15 season, at the Wankhede Stadium. And there were a few similarities in how both the matches went. Just like 10 years back, this match in BKC was a low-scoring one too, where Mumbai were bundled out for 120 in the first innings, followed by 206 by J&K.

Post that, Mumbai did well to score 290, but that wasn’t enough on the day. J&K batsmen Vivrant Sharma (38), Shubham Khajuria (45), and Abid Mushtaq (32), ensured that the team did not crumble under pressure, to take their to a famous win now. This win also means that J&K top the Group A with 29 points.

Rohit Sharma Fails, Shardul Thakur’s Effort Goes in Vain

What would hurt Mumbai even more is, this was a comeback match for Rohit Sharma in the Ranji Trophy. And his own performance was a poor one, where he returned with scores of 3 & 28. Even more so for Shardul Thakur, who gave it his best when the chips were down. He scored a fifty in the first innings, and then followed it up with a ton in the second, but all in vain.

Mumbai remain in third place in the Ranji Trophy points table, after J&K and Baroda, with 22 points. In six matches they have won only three matches, lost two and drawn one only.
