Even though Jasprit Bumrah is perhaps the best bowler in the world, he was left out of the Afghanistan series.

On Tuesday, the chief selector for the Indian team announced the squads for the Test and ODI series vs Afghanistan, which was full of surprises. Lanky Punjab pacer Gurnoor Brar found a spot in both the teams, and so did spinner Harsh Dubey, who has been one of the in the domestic circuit, in the last couple of years. But what really surprised one and all was, there was no Jasprit Bumrah in either squad.

Jasprit Bumrah rested for AFG series

A few reports had claimed that Bumrah, who is currently playing in IPL 2026, would only be part of one team, to manage his workload. But as it turns out. the BCCI has opted to rest him fully. In fact, in has been non-stop cricket for the best bowler in the world, who plays all the formats.

The year started with the limited-overs series against New Zealand, followed by the T20 World Cup 2026, and now the IPL 2026. In the World Cup that India won, Bumrah had a significant contribution, and picked up 14 wickets in 28 overs, spread across 8 matches. The effects of excessive bowling is showing in his returns from IPL. This year, he has been poor picking up 3 wickets in 12 matches. The average is staggering 128, while the economy rate has gone to 8.53.

His absence, however unfortunate, could be a golden chance for the new bowlers across both squads. Brar, who is selected in the team for the first time, would have his chances to shine. He is 6’5, can create awkward angles for the batters; In 18 FC matches, he has picked up 52 wickets. Also in 9 LIST A matches, he has 12 wickets to his name.

Prince Yadav picked in ODIs

Another name who is expected to serve India well, is LSG pacer Prince Yadav. His wicket of Virat Kohli, off an in swinging length delivery has been the highlight so far. IN 12 matches of IPL so far, he has picked up 16 wickets, where his economy has been only 8.53. He was impressive for Delhi in Vijay Hazare Trophy as well, where he picked up 18 wickets in only 8 matches.
