Jaffna Kings have been involved in multiple controversies in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) history.

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) was supposed to kick off season six with music, fireworks and a big rematch. Defending champions Jaffna Kings were set to lock horns against Galle Gallants in the opener, a repeat of the 2024 final at Colombo’s Sinhalese Sports Club Ground. However, the tournament began with a police siren.

As per Newswire report, a co-owner of the Jaffna Kings was picked up by the police. The Special Investigation Unit that handles sports-related offences made the arrest over alleged match-fixing. Word spread through the ground staff and media box before the official announcement even did. The police haven’t named him yet. They only said it’s part of a wider probe into corruption in sport and that they’ll share more once the investigation moves ahead.

Still, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Jaffna were due on the field that evening against Galle. The banners were up, the teams were in the hotel, and then this. Although the match will continue to take place, the controversy has drifted from the conversation. The league’s credibility is now in question.

Sri Lanka’s tough stand against corruption

Sri Lanka is a cricket-playing nation with strict criminal laws specifically targeting corruption in sport. The Prevention of Offences Relating to Sports Act, introduced in 2019, criminalises match-fixing, spot-fixing, misuse of inside information and other forms of manipulation. Those found guilty can face hefty fines and prison sentences of up to 10 years.

As of now, the arrest has not affected the LPL tournament, but it has once again put the spotlight on the Jaffna franchise, which has repeatedly found itself in the middle of off-field controversies despite being one of the most successful teams in LPL history.

Jaffna, a franchise with big history

The Jaffna franchise is the most successful team in LPL history, having won four titles. They won them in a span of five years, winning it in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024. However, they have never been away from controversies.

The franchise’s predecessor, Jaffna Stallions, was abruptly removed from the league in 2021 following ownership and payment disputes. The team later returned under the Jaffna Kings banner with new investors.

In 2022, the franchise’s name surfaced during a match-fixing investigation after a player reportedly informed authorities about an approach to manipulate matches. Although no wrongdoing was proven against the team itself. The franchise underwent another ownership overhaul in 2025 after Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) terminated its agreement with the then-owners over alleged contractual issues. Earlier this year, a fresh ownership group took charge ahead of the 2026 season.

Now, with a co-owner under arrest on the very day the tournament begins, Jaffna Kings once again find themselves making headlines.
