MS Dhoni is captain of CSK again. You cannot keep the man away from leading this side. Last year, Dhoni had finally decided to pass the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad after winning 5 IPL championships. This summer, he’s back at the helm.
CSK’s saviour in 2022
This is not the first time MS Dhoni has had to take charge after stepping away. Shortly before the 2022 season started, he had resigned as CSK captain to hand over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja.
CSK, the defending champions, had a nightmare of a summer. Jadeja could do nothing right with bat and ball, and after a torturous stint, stepped down in the middle of the tournament after leading in 8 matches. Who took over? Who else but Dhoni, for the sake of the Super Kings and for Jadeja to reclaim some form.
CSK, of course, failed to qualify for the playoffs. They were already 9th in the IPL 2022 points table, and there wasn’t much Dhoni could have done with six games left.
Next year, however, CSK won their fifth title under MS Dhoni, and the jubilant and rarely emotional skipper hoisted Ravindra Jadeja after the latter sealed a tense win.
If you thought Dhoni could just focus on his wicketkeeping and batting after quitting as captain in 2024. Well, there was something else in store.
Gaikwad out, Dhoni in
An unfortunate injury to Gaikwad, CSK’s captain and their best batter, meant Dhoni was back as captain again. Questions were asked of his batting position, but you couldn’t deny the fact that he was sharp as ever behind the stumps. Dhoni continued to be a leader, and when Gaikwad was ruled out of the rest of IPL 2025, there was only one man CSK look towards.
MS Dhoni takes over at a similar juncture for CSK. Like in 2022, CSK are second from the bottom in the points table, but this time Thala has enough time to work his magic and salvage the season for his beloved IPL team.
