IPL 2025: Glenn Maxwell opens up on RCB retentions, hints at potential comeback

Glenn Maxwell opens up on RCB’s decision not to retain him ahead of the 2025 IPL auction, expressing appreciation for the respectful communication from the franchise.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell recently shared his thoughts on not being retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. RCB chose to retain only three players for the next season, including Virat Kohli (INR 21 Crore), Rajat Patidar (INR 11 Crore), and Yash Dayal (INR 5 Crore), using a total of INR 37 Crore.

With an auction purse of INR 83 Crore remaining and three Right to Match (RTM) cards, RCB has meaningful resources for the auction. Maxwell, a key member of the squad since 2021, opened up on how RCB communicated their decision and appreciated the manner in which the franchise handled the situation.

“A beautiful exit meeting” – Maxwell

In an interview on ESPNcricinfo’s Around the Wicket show, Maxwell said, “I got a phone call from Mo Bobat and Andy Flower. I sat there on a zoom call, and they sort of explained to me the decision not to be retained. And, it was actually a really beautiful exit meeting, if that if that could be possible. We ended up talking about the game for about half an hour and talking about their strategy and what they were looking to get to do, going forward. So, I was really happy with that.”

Maxwell understands RCB’s future plans

Maxwell acknowledged RCB’s vision for the next season, including changes in their coaching staff, and mentioned that he doesn’t see his journey with RCB as over.

“I wouldn’t say my RCB journey’s over,” Maxwell said. “They were obviously changing a few of their staff as well. So they needed to get that sorted before they started talking to players… I completely understand the direction they’re heading in… I’d certainly love to get back there. It was a great franchise to play for and really enjoyed my time there.” he added.

Mixed season for Maxwell in IPL 2024

Last season, Maxwell had a challenging run in the IPL 2024, scoring just 52 runs in nine innings, with a highest score of 28. However, he contributed six wickets at an average of 21.50 and an economy rate of 8.06. Known as one of the world’s top all-rounders, Maxwell is expected to draw high bids in the upcoming mega auction. With a substantial auction purse, RCB may very well make a strong bid to bring the star all-rounder back into their squad.
