‘God’s plan’: KKR players make best use of 20-hour Varanasi detour, seek blessings at Kashi Vishwanath

KKR claimed a resounding 98-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday that took them to the top of IPL 2024 standings

After a challenging twenty-hour detour from Lucknow to Guwahati to Varanasi, the Kolkata Knight Riders finally reached their home city ahead of their match against the Mumbai Indians. The team’s original flight on May 6 couldn’t land in Kolkata due to severe thunderstorms, leading to a series of diversions and an extended journey. The KKR players made the visiting most of their time in Varanasi by visiting the Kashi Vishwanath temple.

After a thumping 98-run victory over the Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday, the squad was scheduled to depart for Kolkata at 5:45 PM on Monday. They were due to arrive in Kolkata at 7:25 p.m. However, due to adverse weather conditions, the charter flight was rerouted, first to Guwahati, where they waited to try landing in Kolkata again. However, bad weather persisted, forcing the plane to reroute back to Uttar Pradesh. The KKR players spent the night in Varanasi, stuck on the plane until 2 a.m. on May 7.

Despite the inconvenience, the players made the most of their unexpected stopover in Varanasi by visiting the sacred Kashi Vishwanath temple and enjoying the spiritual ambience of the holy city. They also shared moments from their iconic boat ride on the river Ganga, which seemed to lift their spirits.

KKR finally reach Kolkata after 19 hours

On Tuesday, the team boarded a flight from Varanasi to Kolkata, departing at 1:15 p.m. and arriving at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport around 2:40 p.m. This long and challenging journey finally ended, allowing the team to focus on their upcoming matches.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ next game is against the Mumbai Indians at Eden Gardens on May 11. The Shreyas Iyer-led team will then travel to Ahmedabad to face the Gujarat Titans on May 13, followed by a game against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on May 19 for their final two league matches. With their homecoming now complete, KKR is looking to regroup and regain their momentum for the rest of the season.
