IPL 2024 introduces Smart Review System in place of DRS for more accurate results

Ahead of the commencement of IPL 2024, a new system - Smart Review System - is all set to be introduced to help the officials

IPL 2024 will witness the introduction of Smart Review System in order to increase the speed and accuracy of decision making. The upcoming edition of IPL will get underway from March 22 with CSK taking on RCB in Chennai.

What will Smart Review System mean for IPL 2024?

As per ESPNCricinfo, the TV umpire will receive inputs directly from two Hawk-Eye operators who will be sitting in the same room as the umpire and provide him with images captured by eight of Hawk-Eye’s hi-speed cameras across the ground. The TV broadcast director, who until now was a conduit between the third umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators, will no longer be involved under the new system.

For every game, there are eight Hawk-eye cameras. Two each side of the ground on the straight boundaries and two each side at square leg. Until IPL 2023, the Hawk-eye cameras were only used for ball-tracking and ultra edge.

As per the report, the system will access to more visuals for the TV umpire, including split screen images. The BCCI conducted a two-day workshop on the Smart Review System where 15 umpires are expected to work with the system in IPL 2024. England’s The Hundred league had previously attempted to trial this system as well.

Under the Smart Review System, if the Hawk-Eye operator spots that the ball had pitched outside leg, he will tell the TV umpire immediately and they will then prioritise ball tracking.
