IPL 2024 Auction: Sanjeev Goenka, Kumar Sangakkara unfazed by Rs 20-crore barrier breached

Sanjeev Goenka and Kumar Sangakkara aren't surprised with KKR shattering the 20-crore barrier, purchasing Mitchell Starc for Rs 24.7 Cr.

From a salary cap of just Rs 20 Cr in 2008 to spending Rs 24.75 Cr on a single player, IPL auction has come a long way. But is it going overboard to pay one player 25% of the entire salary purse? LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka, and RR director Kumar Sangakkara do not agree.

Australia Captain Pat Cummins broke the Rs 20-Crore barrier only for his pace partner Mitchell Starc to surpass him 30 minutes later. Starc at Rs 24.75 Cr became the most expensive player in IPL history after a bid from Kolkata Knight Riders.

“We knew it would get breached but not by us. Mini auctions are notorious for that. A high purse and low supply players can go for that. It can happen and it did happen,” said Kumar Sangakkara.

While Pat Cummins’ deal left many astounded, Starc’s deal surpassed all expectations. Despite the high cap, seasoned bidders like LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka and Rajasthan Royals coach, Kumar Sangakkara expressed that they were not surprised by the astounding figures.

Goenka, on the other hand, expressed a straightforward perspective, stating, “These barriers were getting breached each season. Who knows, the 25 crore barrier may get breached next time around.”

The high caps in the IPL 2024 Auction rather marked a notable advancement for the IPL, especially considering that the total salary cap in the league’s inaugural year was Rs 20 crore . In the 15 years since its inception, the IPL has undergone significant growth and development.
