IPL 2023: Team India is embroiled in a major injury crisis with Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Prasidh Krishna and Jasprit Bumrah among players under rehabilitation. The quartet are ruled out of IPL 2023, while Deepak Chahar suffered a hamstring injury in the tournament. While many have hit out at the IPL for increased workloads, Chairman Arun Dhumal has dismissed those claims. Follow Indian Premier League LIVE Updates on Insidesport.IN

The IPL is a big money spinner for the players and often many stars. Given the money involved, there’s a prevailing belief that players are more interested in Playing in the IPL than for the country. Furthermore, a lot of blame for injuries has been put on the tournament.

The IPL chairman cited that players will have to work on their fitness to sustain all three formats. Dhumal cited James Anderson’s example of how the England pacer chose a particular format to extend his career. While he did not mention names, his suggestion could directly be targeted to Bumrah, Deepak Chahar and Prasidh Krishna, all of whom are struggling with injuries.

“They need to improve their fitness levels. Even then, for a medium-pace bowler, injuries are bound to happen at some point in time.  In case we have to see longevity for a cricketer, they will have to make a choice. Either keep playing every format and every game for a few years or rest for some matches and make a long career. Jimmy Anderson is an example for so many players. At this age, the kind of bowling he is doing and the number of wickets he has taken, it’s phenomenal,” Dhumal said.

Dhumal however has asked for a change in mindset. The IPL chairman argues that not all injuries happen during the IPL while many overseas stars don’t shift the blame on the tournament when injured.  He added that because of the finances involved, there is a tendency to blame IPL for everything and anything.

Speaking to Indian Express, He added, “Virat Kohli has been playing IPL for so many years, he’s never been injured. Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami never got injured. Does it have anything to do with the IPL? At the same time, you have Raj Angad Bawa getting injured. He’s played IPL. Shreyas Iyer got injured but not because of the IPL.”

Dhumal said,  “Just because they make money through IPL, we start blaming IPL for anything and everything. Injuries are an integral part of any sport. Our badminton stars are getting injured. They don’t play in the IPL. There are so many stars who are coming from overseas and playing in the IPL. They have not given an excuse that IPL is responsible for their injury. So we have to get out of this mindset.”
