IPL 2022: 5 players whose selection ‘IRKED’ Simon Katich

1. Nicholas Pooran (Rs 10.75): A super flop of IPL 2021 with just 85 runs in 11 innings at a lowly average of 7.73. But SRH outbid KKR and CSK to get his service for a whopping 10.75 Cr, almost a three-fold increase in his valuation. However, SRH didn’t look for in-form options such as Shreyas Iyer.

2. Rahul Tripathi (Rs 8.5 Cr): A good batsman but is he worth Rs 8.5 Crore? Most analyst will say no. In fact, he had a jump in salary from Rs 65 lakh to 8.5 Crore, making him the third-highest earning member of the team.

3. Abhishek Sharma (6.75): The youngster was a curious case. Despite showing promise, he had a rather poor run in IPL 2021 with SRH. The youngster scored just 98 runs in 8 matches at an average of 16.33 but SRH outbid Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans to get him for a whopping 6.75 Cr and Simon Katich was very unhappy about it.

4. Not retaining Rashid Khan: The most surprising of all was SRH’s inability to retain the best T20 spinner Rashid Khan. As per information available with InsideSport, the Afghan spinner wanted SRH retain him in the highest category (Rs 16 Cr) but SRH decided against that. Instead, Gujarat Giants gave him Rs 15 Crore contract same as the captain Hardik Pandya to secure his service. Wasn’t the best spinner of the league with batting pedigree not deserve the amount? Simon Katich felt he did.

5. Retention of Umran Malik and Abdul Samad (4 Cr each): Instead of securing the likes of Jason Holder, SRH shelled out 8 crores on inexperienced players like Umrann Malik and Abdul Samad. Even though both have shown tremendous promise, was it justified to pay them 4 Cr each? Simon Katich had reservations against that too.
