Highest Earner Indian SPORTS – Anirban Lahiri’s BIG PAY-DAY: Lahiri’s effort has made him highest ever Indian money earner across sports in a SINGLE TOURNAMENT. No Indian has ever won bigger pay-cheque than what Lahiri got in the winnings.
- In the $20 million Players Championship, Lahiri won a pay cheque of $2.18 million i.e (Rs 16.7 crore)
- It’s been 7 years since Lahiri has won at the PGA Tour.
- By finishing 2nd, he won the biggest cheque of his career, and the biggest ever for an Indian sportsperson from a one-week event. It was the 34-year-old’s second career runner-up finish.
- In five appearances at The Players Championship so far, he had missed four cuts and finished tied 74th in 2019.
- This win also improves Lahiri’s World Golf Rankings by 233 places. From an abysmal 322 to 89.
- Pune born Lahiri also breaks into top-100 for the first time since August 2018.
“The beauty about what we do is that you’re one week away from being a PGA Tour winner,” said Anirban Lahiri in a pre-tournament news conference at The Players Championship.
“I want to win. I’ve been here seven years; haven’t gotten over the line yet. That’s definitely a monkey I want to get off my back. Today was as good an opportunity as any,” said Lahiri.
In the final test, the Aussie had to beat the Indian. Cameron Smith, with a six-under 66, edged third-round leader Lahiri who closed out on 3-under 69, hands on his knees, contemplating what could have been.
