IPL 2022 Format: BCCI reverts to 10-team 2011 format – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the groups and format for IPL 2022 on Friday. The ten teams have been divided into two groups of five teams each. Follow IPL 2022 live updates on InsideSport.IN.

The groups have been assigned on the basis of the number of titles they have won – meaning that the two most successful teams in Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are placed in two different groups.

Every team will play a total of 14 matches – twice against the five teams (4 teams from their group and 1 team from the other group), and once against four teams from the other group).

For instance, Mumbai Indians are placed in Group A alongside Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. They will play twice against these four teams, while they will also play two matches against Chennai Super Kings of Group B. Rohit Sharma’s team will play four matches against the other four teams in Group B – Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans.

Group A – Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants

Group B – Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans

The governing body has also confirmed the schedule and format of the competition. As we have previously reported, the 2022 season will start on 26th March and the final will be played on 29th May. There will be a total of 70 league stage matches, which will be followed by playoffs. The matches will be played across four venues – Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium, MCA International Stadium.

IPL 2022 Format, Schedule, Group Details:

  • Dates – 26th March to 29th May, 2022.
  • Venues – Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium, DY Patil Stadium, MCA International Stadium.
  • Venue-wise fixture breakup – 20 matches at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium, 15 matches at Brabourne Stadium and MCA International Stadium.
  • Every team will play 14 league stage matches.
  • Every team will play 4 matches each at Wankhede Stadium and DY Patil Stadium and 3 matches each at Brabourne Stadium (CCI) and MCA International Stadium.
  • Ten teams have been divided into two groups. Each group consists of five teams.
  • Group A – Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants
  • Group B – Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans
  • Every team will play twice against the five teams (4 teams from their group and 1 team from the other group)
  • Every team will play once against four teams (from the other group)
