IPL 2022: BCCI ‘to initiate action against players pulling out of IPL’, after ‘extremely unhappy’ Franchises RAISE CONCERNS

Player Pullouts IPL 2022: In the recently held IPL GC meeting, the BCCI is contemplating coming up with repercussions for foreign stars who opt out of the IPL without adequate reason.

As per Cricbuzz, some franchises have raised concerns regarding the growing trend of players pulling out having secured a small fee at the auction.

This time around, both Jason Roy and Alex Hales, sold at their base price, opted out of the season, citing personal reasons leaving both Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders in a lurch.

“The GC has a commitment towards the franchises who are the important stakeholders of the league. They bid for a player after a lot of planning. Their calculations go haywire if a player pulls out, that too for flimsy reasons,” said a GC member told Cricbuzz.

“There will not be a sweeping policy that everyone who has pulled out of the IPL will be prevented for a certain number of years. It will be on a case-by-case basis and some research will be done before action is initiated. What if the reason is genuine,” a source in the know said.

As things stand, injury or international commitments could very well be acceptable, with Lucknow Super Giants losing their Rs 7.25 Cr buy Mark Wood to injury. As for Jason Roy, he had said he wanted to spend quality time with family and work on his game.

“I feel it is only right that I spend some quality time with my family. As well as spending time on myself and my game over the next couple of months, leading into a very busy year,” Roy said. The English opener also opted out of the County Season for Surrey.

Meanwhile, Hales, who was bought for his base price of INR 1.5 crore by Kolkata Knight Riders, said he needed time to recharge himself and also cited bubble fatigue. KKR had to scramble for options and picked Aaron Finch, who will miss the first five games due to Australia’s tour of Pakistan.

Pull-outs are not a new phenomenon in the IPL, with Mitchell Starc having famously done so twice with Royal CHallengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. Starc did not register for the IPL 2022 auction citing bubble fatigue and the BCCI has taken into account that the Australia fast bowler may have been compelled to withdraw by his board meaning that the player had little choice.
