Mumbai Indians Dewald Brevis – With uncanny similarity to South African batting legend AB De Villiers on shots, fans and teammates gave him the nickname ‘Baby AB’. Brevis played uppercuts, paddle sweeps, reverse sweeps and switch hits effortlessly like Mr 360 AB de Villiers did. While he wanted to play for RCB, it was MI who showed interest.

“It is a huge honour to be part of a franchise with an amazing record like Mumbai Indians. Me and my brother idolised so many players in the Mumbai family while we grew up. Sachin Tendulkar is one of my childhood heroes. I am very excited to play under Rohit Sharma. He is someone that I admire. To be able to share a dressing room with a captain and player like Rohit is a dream come true. I will try and learn as much as I can from him,” Dewald Brevis told TOI.
At the recently concluded U19 World Cup, he adjudged the man of the tournament. He top-scored in the tournament with 506 runs in 6 innings at an average of 84.33 including two centuries and three half-centuries.

On Monday, he celebrated IPL entry by scoring a 30-ball 46 against Dolphins in the CSA T20 Challenge alongside former Mumbai Indians opener Quinton De Kock. Brevis said despite all the success in U19 World Cup, he is keeping his feet on the ground.
“It (Under-19 World Cup) was an amazing experience. I am just keeping my feet on the ground. It’s been a memorable few weeks in the West Indies. It was tough to cut the noise around me. I do think that it helped to challenge and develop the mental side of my game,” Dewald Brevis said.

IPL 2022: Why Baby AB?
Brevis said he never intentionally tried to copy AB de Villiers. Rather the shots came naturally after spending some time with ABD at the nets.
“While growing up AB was my cricket hero. I never intentionally tried to copy AB. My cricket and batting style developed naturally. I often watched AB play on TV and at SuperSport Park. Similar cricket shots came naturally,” Brevis said.
Will be overwhelming to meet Kohli
While he has already been dubbed as the next ABD, his biggest dream is to meet De Villiers’ good friend Virat Kohli, who he admires.
“He (Virat) plays with aggression and passion. He is a great chaser of the game. He can adapt to different games and formats and situations. He is a master in playing all three formats. His batting technique is just superb. It will be overwhelming to meet him,” Brevis said.
