“Intentions very clear”: Karun Nair thinks he’s “good enough” for India comeback after whirlwind VHT season

Averaging 664 in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Karun Nair has categorically stated that he intends to make a comeback to the Indian side after 8 long years

Karun Nair is arguably in the form of his life, having rediscovered his mojo with consistent & mind-boggling performances in domestic cricket. It has been eight years since the Vidarbha captain last played for India and he is now ready to make a comeback to the national side. Nair averages 664 in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy and has single-handedly guided his side into the semis. But he is looking at the larger picture now and is aiming to return to the national side at the next possible opportunity.

Karun Nair wants to make India comeback

Speaking to Sportstar, Nair revealed that he had playing well for the last 16-17 months, adding that playing in County matches helped him gain confidence. After missing most of the 2022-2023 season, during which his home state Karnataka decided to move on from the batter, he found a new home in Vidarbha and has been outstanding in the current season. Karun stated that the intentions were very clear from his side and that he wants to play for India once again.

If I didn’t feel like that, I wouldn’t go and play county cricket. Why would I do that if I didn’t have the belief in myself to play [for India]? The intentions are very clear from my side. I think I can, and I think I’m good enough,” Karun Nair said.

Karun is the highest run-getter in the VHT 2024-25 season so far. He remains unbeaten in the ongoing season to date, with 644 runs including 5 centuries to his name. Nair created history when he became the only second Indian to score a triple-century in Tests. It came in the 5th Test against England in Chennai in 2016. It was followed by some average performances in 2017 following which he was shown the door. To date, Nair has played 6 Tests, and 2 ODIs. His next best chance to get back into the Indian team would be the IND vs ENG Test series later in June 2025.
