India vs Australia 3rd Test: Brisbane weather to help Team India’s WTC Final qualification chances?

It's almost certain that rain will disrupt play on the 5th day of The Gabba Test.

Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep have saved the India cricket team from massive trouble. After giving their all with the ball, the two pacers showed top batters like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma how to tackle Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. Not only did they ensure the follow-on couldn’t be enforced in the India vs Australia 3rd Test, but they even smashed Cummins for a couple of sixes.

Bumrah & Akash Deep save Team India

The India dressing room jumped in delight as soon as it was confirmed that Australia would have to come out to bat, but the best thing was the fact that Bumrah and Akash also kept Team India in the chase for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 Final.

After the 10-wicket thrashing in Adelaide, all hope seemed lost. It further took a hit when, after getting hammered for 445 runs, Team India was 4 down in under 14 overs. Luckily, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja led the way. Finally, it was Bumrah and Akash’s 39-run stand that took Team India to safety and kept them alive in the WTC 2025 Final qualification race.

Brisbane rain & WTC Final 2025 qualification scenario

Australia should pack India up in a couple of overs and then would likely get quick runs to hand India a target of around 300 runs with 60-70 overs left. This would mean they can go 2-1 up after the Gabba Test. But this is unlikely to happen. From 9 AM to 6 PM (local time), there is a 20-55% chance of rain. If stoppages happen due to bad weather, we might end up losing a couple of hours, if not the whole day.

This means after 3 matches the series will be leveled at 1-1. Considering what has transpired in Adelaide and now Brisbane, Team India would feel lucky. They are placed third on the WTC points table, with South Africa and Australia both ahead. The Proteas would remain at the top irrespective, but the gap between India and Australia will decrease slightly. If the series ends up as a draw or in Team India’s favour, 2-1 or 3-1, they would have a realistic chance of making it to Lord’s next year.
