India Tour of South Africa: Relaxed BUBBLE-NORMS for Virat Kohli & Co: After allowing only a day of quarantine for Virat Kohli & Co on their arrival, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has further relaxed the bio-bubble norms for Team India. As per new norms, due to the emergence of the Omicron variant of Covid-19, the immediate contacts of anyone testing Covid-19 positive in the bio-bubble can continue playing and training. Also, the Covid-19 positive person will not need to leave the bubble and can quarantine in the hotel room if clinically stable.

“Considering that all those within the ecosystem will be vaccinated, the positive case will isolate within the hotel room if clinically stable. Contacts will continue playing and training with non-medical interventions strictly observed, and tested daily,” CSA’s chief medical officer Shuaib Manjra was quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

India Tour of South Africa: What are the CSA bio-bubble norms?

  • Team India will enter a hotel room isolation upon their arrival in Johannesburg.
  • All players will be tested and following three negative RT-PCR tests, they will enter a Bio-Secure Environment (BSE)
  • Inside the BSE, if anyone tests positive, they will not be moved out. Instead, they will be kept in a designated quarantine facility inside the team hotel if they do not show any clinically stable.
  • Close contacts can continue with their daily life inside the bubble.
  • Close contacts will be able to go to practice and play matches.
  • All the revised rules are in place despite Gauteng province being the epicentre of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The norms have been agreed upon by Cricket South Africa (CSA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the Virat Kohli-led Indian side that will play three-match Test series followed by a three-match ODI series in their cut short tour.

Earlier, a CSA spokesperson informed InsideSport that the Indian contingent will not be required to enter a hard quarantine in South Africa upon their arrival on December 16. Upon their arrival, team India will go straight to a designated hotel for a day of room isolation where they will be tested thrice during the day. Once they are clear, they will head to the team hotel in Centurion.

“Team India will quarantine upon arrival and will be released following the results of the arrival COVID-19 tests that will take place when the team arrives at their hotel. As long as it takes for the arrival Covid-19 test results to come out. No longer than a day,” a CSA spokesperson told InsideSport on Tuesday.

All South Africa-bound players are undergoing a three-day quarantine in Mumbai. After ending quarantine, they will board a charter flight to Johannesburg on December 16, Thursday.
