India take over English Cricket as Delhi Capitals owners’ acquire majority stake in Hampshire

As Indian business giants continue to influence cricket globally, GMR’s acquisition of Hampshire signals a new era of international ownership in English cricket.

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners are rapidly expanding their influence in world cricket, and now, they are venturing into English county cricket. In a significant move, the GMR Group, which co-owns the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, has taken a majority stake in Hampshire Cricket. This acquisition marks the first time an overseas entity has acquired ownership of an English county team, setting a new precedent in the sport’s global landscape.

GMR Group Acquires Majority Stake in Hampshire

Hampshire Cricket, one of England’s most respected county clubs, will soon be under the control of GMR Group, an Indian infrastructure conglomerate with strong roots in cricket as per ESPNcricinfo. The GMR Group is expected to initially hold a 53% stake in Hampshire Sport & Leisure Holdings Ltd, the parent company of Hampshire Cricket, with a plan to acquire full ownership over the next two years. This acquisition includes the historic club’s operations and its renowned ground, the Utilita Bowl in Southampton.

This move follows Hampshire’s decision to sell a majority stake after former chairman Rob Bransgrove put his 60% share on the market. Bransgrove, however, will continue as Group Chairman until at least 2026, ensuring a smooth transition of power while overseeing the club’s daily operations.

Cricket’s Globalisation: IPL Owners eye English Cricket

The acquisition of Hampshire is not GMR’s first foray into global cricket. The company also owns teams in other cricket leagues, such as the Dubai Capitals in the UAE’s ILT20 and a stake in the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC). This expansion into English cricket further solidifies the group’s ambition to influence the sport on a global scale, connecting with diverse cricket markets.

The recent trend of Indian companies investing in cricket overseas is becoming increasingly noticeable. GMR’s purchase is part of a larger trend in which IPL franchise owners are seeking opportunities beyond Indian shores. While IPL teams have already acquired franchises in various T20 leagues across the world, this marks the first significant investment in English county cricket, potentially opening doors for future collaborations and partnerships.

Impact on Southern Brave and The Hundred ft Delhi Capitals

While the acquisition includes Hampshire Cricket, it doesn’t automatically transfer ownership of Southern Brave, the Hundred franchise based at the Utilita Bowl. However, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) continues its process of selling equity stakes in the eight Hundred teams, GMR could eventually acquire a stake in the Southern Brave franchise as well, aligning its interests with both county and franchise cricket in England.

New Era for Hampshire

Rob Bransgrove’s vision for Hampshire has always been ambitious. Since taking over in 2000, he has been instrumental in relocating the club to its current home at the Utilita Bowl, which has become one of England’s premier cricketing venues. With GMR’s backing, Hampshire Cricket will look to further enhance its facilities and continue its legacy of hosting high-profile matches, including Test matches, as it aims to host its first-ever Ashes Test in 2027.

Grandhi Kiran Kumar, GMR Group’s Corporate Chairman, expressed his excitement about this acquisition, stating that GMR aims to connect with global youth and transform sports into a platform for cultural unity and excellence. His vision aligns with the broader globalisation of cricket, which is increasingly seeing crossover investments from diverse regions.

Turning Point in English County Cricket

The ECB’s chief executive, Richard Gould, has welcomed GMR’s investment, seeing it as a sign of the growing global interest in English cricket. Gould acknowledged that the influx of foreign investments highlights the enduring appeal of county cricket and its potential for further growth.

The acquisition of Hampshire Cricket by GMR Group could be the beginning of more overseas investments in English county cricket, setting a trend where Indian business conglomerates expand their footprint in England, reshaping the future of the sport both on and off the field.

Conclusion: IPL Influence Spreads to England

As Indian business giants continue to influence cricket globally, GMR’s acquisition of Hampshire signals a new era of international ownership in English cricket. The deal reflects the ongoing globalisation of the sport and the increasing interconnectedness between cricketing nations, leagues, and business interests. With the backing of IPL team owners, English county cricket could soon see significant changes, paving the way for a new chapter in its long and storied history.
