Upton was hired to help the players deal with pressure and help them work their way through struggles. He achieved relative success, with Virat Kohli benefiting from his input. The 34-year-old underwent a wretched run before turning back the clock starting from the Asia Cup 2022.

He also spent time with KL Rahul and the Indian vice-captain scored half-centuries to return to form. However, in the crucial semifinal vs England, the Indian opener once again faltered. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar slammed him for “not doing anything with KL Rahul.”

It was Upton’s second stint with India, having previously worked with Gary Kirsten. Upton was praised for his impact when MS Dhoni’s side won the 2011 World Cup at home. He’s worked with a number of teams across the globe. His IPL stints include time with Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils (Capitals) and Pune Warriors.

Paddy Upton’s departure comes after BCCI sacked Chetan Sharma and the selection committee. The Indian board called for applications for new selectors with India hitting the reboot button in T20Is. The clean-up continues into the squad, with Ravichandran Ashwin, Dinesh Karthik and Mohammed Shami set to have their t20I careers cut short.

Even Rohit Sharma could lose his T20I captaincy, with Hardik Pandya earmarked as a leader for the 2024 World Cup in West Indies and the USA. Insidesport understands an official announcement on the same will be made in January before the India vs SriLanka series.
