India squad for England Tests: Shreyas Iyer, Sai Sudharsan & Rajat Patidar in contention

The tour starts in 2 months and the BCCI has started to fill in the gaps they were left for the world to see in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started preparations for the India Test Tour of England. The board is having discussions regarding the squad for the 5-match series. BCCI is looking to fill a couple of spots in the middle order and is interested in picking Shreyas Iyer, Karun Nair, Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Devdutt Padikkal, and Sarfaraz Khan.

India squad for England Tests details

According to PTI, the BCCI will name the squad for the India vs England Test series in the second week of May. Since ‘India A’ will land in England in late May and will play two practice matches against England Lions and an intrasquad game with the main India side. That’s why BCCI won’t send a big squad, a 17-man, like they sent to Australia. But perhaps 15-16 players.

Karun Nair’s selection chances

InsideSport had previously reported that Karun Nair is in BCCI’s scheme of things for the India vs England Test series. The batter had an incredible Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. And now, Nair’s doing well in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.

Padikkal & Sarfaraz, with one foot in

Devdutt Padikkal played in Australia, and his name being included in the contention list isn’t surprising. The same goes for Sarfaraz Khan, who was also with India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), Down Under.

Shreyas Iyer & Rajat Patidar look to return to India’s Test team

The three names that are exciting are Shreyas Iyer, Rajat Patidar, and Sai Sudharsan. The first two haven’t played for India since early 2024. Both featured against England. Shreyas had injured his back and was subsequently dropped for poor performance. The same went for Patidar. He made his debut in that series and, after 6 failures, was dropped as well.

Shreyas was one of the best middle-order batters in the Ranji Trophy. Meanwhile, he was the four-highest scorer in the domestic red-ball tournament and played a major role in taking Vidarbha to their 3rd Ranji Trophy title.

Sai Sudharsan could get a maiden call-up

Sudharsan hasn’t played Test cricket for India. But has featured in ODIs. He’s played for Surrey in County Cricket and so has experience of playing red-ball cricket in England. And did exceptionally well for Tamil Nadu in the recent Ranji Trophy season. His IPL performance for Gujarat Titans has been extraordinary as well.
