India head coach Gautam Gambhir receives death threat, lodges complaint

India head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly approached authorities over a death threat he received on email

India cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly lodged a complaint after receiving a death threat via an email. The former Indian cricketer, who is on a break currently amid IPL 2025, filed a plaint at the Rajendra Nagar police station in Delhi. Gambhir took over the reins of the Indian team from Rahul Dravid, whose tenure ended after the T20 World Cup win.

As per reports, Gambhir received an email from ISIS which read, “I kill you.” As per India Today, no formal complaint has been registered but the cyber cell is working actively to trace the origin of the email and the sender.

We have been informed about an alleged threat mail received on an email ID associated with Gautam Gambhir. The same is being investigated. He is already a Delhi Police protectee, and we do not comment on specific security arrangements,” said Delhi Police in a statement.

Gambhir as India head coach

Gambhir, who was a former BJP MP from Delhi, was roped in as India’s head coach in 2024. He was previously associated with IPL 2024 defending champs KKR and had made his move to the national team after leading the IPL franchise to their third trophy as mentor.

Under Gambhir, India performed poorly in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia. However, he led India from the front to Champions Trophy victory in 2025. Gambhir’s next assignment will be the five-match Test series against England that will commence in June.
