IND vs WI LIVE: Wasim Jaffer to InsideSport, ‘Washington Sundar ahead of Ravi Ashwin in white-ball formats, IPL to be crucial’
In an exclusive interaction with Insidesport.in, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer weighed in on India’s spin options and has put his weight behind Washington Sundar. Jaffer opined that Sundar’s all-round skill set puts him in good stead ahead of someone like Ravichandran Ashwin in the shorter formats of the game.
Wasim Jaffer said, “I think it depends on what Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma and the selectors think about Ravichandran Ashwin. Washington Sundar obviously gives you batting and bowling options and he is quite young and he can give you a lot of years as a cricketer. He is a slightly better batsman than Ashwin, but Ashwin definitely is a far better bowler than Washington.”
Jaffer believes that the IPL 2022 will be key in determining how things will pant out for the off-spin duo from Tamil Nadu. Both Sundar and Ashwin are part of the players’ pool having been released by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals.
He added, “But I think in shorter formats, Washington Sundar is a little bit ahead. If you take a look at the whole package, I think Sundar gives you more as a batter, as a fielder and might take a little bit of an edge in T20 cricket. Ashwin still has a role, with his experience and variations and with the IPL coming up, we will get to see how he goes about it and take a call. If Ashwin has a decent enough IPL, I’m sure he will be in the mix and in the thoughts of the selectors, the coach and the captain.”
