Ishan Kishan, who became the costliest auction pick of IPL 2022 with Rs 15.25 Crore, endured a lacklustre run in the West Indies series. But on Thursday, Mumbai Indians breathed a sigh of relief when the youngster slammed 56-ball 89 stitching together a 111-run stand for the opening wicket.

His knock was filled with 10 fours and three sixes with the most runs coming in from the mid-wicket region. While he missed out a well-deserved century, he did enough not just to alleviate fears of poor form ahead of IPL but also justified his massive price tag.

“I got to learn a lot from the West Indies series. My intent wasn’t good enough, I wasn’t positive enough. I was just trying to keep it simple here – watch the ball and play my shots. It’s a positive thing for the batting unit as well because you need to hit gaps preparing for the world cup in Australia. I was talking to Shreyas about the mid-wicket region. He said if you middle the ball you could get a boundary. If you hit the gaps you can get two. And it went my way,” Ishan Kishan said after the match.

For Shreyas Iyer, he was in and out of the team. After KKR paid a whopping Rs 12.25 Cr for the former Delhi Capitals captain, Iyer struggled with form. In fact, he got a chance after Suryakumar Yadav suffered an injury ahead of the match.
But after a string of mediocre scores (8, 9, 37, 5, 25, 25) in T20s, Shreyas Iyer finally hit form smashing 57 off just 24 balls to send a big message to his critics. Kolkata Knight Riders’ new captain smashed five fours and two sixes to dismantle Sri Lankan bowling attack.
“Once I got going, I wanted to play my shots and keep the intent going. Our plan was to hit the pockets. Initially, that’s what we did, and things came out pretty well for us. Coming from Kolkata, this ground had different dimensions. I wasn’t thinking a lot, thought 180 was a good total, was just looking to watch the ball closely and then played my shots,” Shreyas Iyer said after the match.
