The 2nd Test against South Africa in a new year didn’t start well for Team India. After losing Virat Kohli to injury and managing just 202 in the first innings, India suffered a huge injury scare. Mohammed Siraj, India’s star pacer, limped off the field without completing his over.

It was in the penultimate over of Day 1 when Mohammed Siraj was in the middle of a fiery spell. As he was about to finish his over, he pulled up his hamstring during his run-up and could not continue. Shardul Thakur completed the remaining delivery.

As for the match, South Africa held the edge on Day 1 after bowling India out for 202 in the first innings. KL Rahul scored 50 and R Ashwin scored 46 while Jasprit Bumrah’s late cameo took India to 200. Otherwise, India suffered the same middle-order crisis with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane scoring 3 and 0 respectively. But Mohammed Shami sent Aiden Markram back to reduce South Africa to 35/1 at the close of play.

Virat Kohli’s big injury scare – India’s day didn’t start well as Test skipper Virat Kohli was ruled out with an upper back spasm.

“Virat Kohli had a spasm on his upper back this morning. He won’t feature in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers. The BCCI medical team will be monitoring him during the course of this Test match,” a BCCI statement said.

However, as per reports, it is likely to be a recurrence of his injury that he picked up in 2018. In 2018, he was suffering from a condition called ‘herniated disc’ (slipped disc) and was advised by the doctor to not play county cricket for Surrey if he wanted to be part of the Test series after that.

The condition didn’t warrant surgery which could have ruled him out for a good three to four months. A back spasm is a sudden tightness and pain in the back muscles. It may happen from overuse of a muscle or an injury. Kohli is believed to have the same kind of discomfort now.
