Worst, a solid player like Sanju Samson is also not been given chances in ODIs due to management upping Pant in the leadership role. Former India selector K Srikkanth has asked the Delhi Capitals to play domestic cricket to get back his form. With only four matches left, Pant’s ODI fate is hanging in the tightrope, as the new selection panel may look beyond him given his struggles in white-ball cricket. “You are messing up these chances. If you smash into such matches, it’ll be good right? The World Cup is coming up. Already, a lot of people are saying that Pant isn’t scoring so it’ll add fuel to the fire,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel Cheeky Cheeka.

15, 125, 0, 56, & 18 are the scores Pant has registered in the last five ODIs. While his ODI numbers are marginally better in T20Is, it is the consistency that he has lacked. Overall, in 11 ODIs in 2022, the southpaw has scored 213 runs. In between one few big scores, there is always a lean patch and a needless shot that makes experts and fans frustrated. In the first ODI against New Zealand, Pant played an unnecessary pull shot after doing all the hard work to reach 15 runs.
This has been a problem of Pant, playing the wrong shot at the wrong time, not accelerating when needed, and going in the shell, when rotating strike rate is what needs to be done. Samson has fared much better than Pant in the limited opportunities that he has got. The RR skipper has scored 179 runs in six ODIs in 2022. The wicketkeeper batter has also finished matches well for India. Srikkanth feels Pant should be given a break and instead play domestic cricket to get back to form
“Maybe you can give him (Pant) a break and tell him ‘just wait a bit, come and play in India’, they haven’t handled him well. Are you going to wait for a couple of matches before giving him a break or remove him after one or two games?” Srikkanth added.

IND vs NZ: Why only four matches left for Pant to prove his mettle in ODI cricket
· With the Chetan Sharma-led selection panel sacked, BCCI are set to hire a new selection committee by end of 2022.
· The new set of selectors maybe won’t back Pant due to his struggles in ODI cricket.
· Hence these four ODIs will now be a huge test for Pant to see whether he fits in the 50-over format ahead of World Cup 2023
· India will play three ODIs in Bangladesh before the new selection committee is announced.
· With only 21 matches left for the World Cup, the selectors might place a bet on Samson and try to give him ample opportunities before the showpiece event.
“He’s going to put pressure on himself. He needs to reinvent himself. He has to do something right – stand and play for a while and then go for it… He’s throwing his wicket away all the time.” India will take on New Zealand in the third and final ODI on Wednesday in Christchurch.
