Skipper Hardik leaves Dhoni, Virat and Rohit behind
When things are going your way, they surely go in only one direction. In hindsight, India could have won or even lost the Napier T20. However, whatever is said and done, India will be taking the T20I series trophy home. After the series win in Napier, Indian T20 captain Hardik Pandya made a record, which not many thought he would have at the start of his captaincy stint.
Till Napier T20I, Hardik has led the Blues in five matches, and he is yet to taste a defeat. That’s right. No Indian T20I skipper has been able to achieve the feat of leading the team in five matches or more.
- Hardik first took over the reins of the national T20 team earlier this year, in June, against Ireland in Dublin.
- India registered a 2-0 win over the Irish under Hardik’s leadership.
- Hardik was the stand-in captain for the Lauderhill T20 against the West Indies.
- India registered a thumping win over the Caribbean side by 88 runs.
- In his second assignment as T20 skipper, Hardik led India to a 1-0 series win over New Zealand.
No Indian skipper in his first five T20Is has managed to avoid a defeat other than Hardik. The legendary MS Dhoni could manage only two wins, and his predecessor Virat lost one game. Rohit Sharma too has lost a game in his first five matches as Indian captain.
Hardik to be elevated as permanent T20I skipper
Hardik has enjoyed an excellent 2022 so far, and the year only tends to get better and better for the lanky all-rounder. Especially in T20s, a format that requires the power of youth and exuberance, Hardik seems to be the perfect fit as a leader. At the start of the year, he led the Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL crown. His teammates speak highly of his captaincy credentials and in particular highlight his ability to stay calm under immense pressure.
It is reported that the selectors are already looking toward the future. In all likelihood, Hardik Pandya will be elevated as India’s T20I skipper. A change of guard is imminent in Indian cricket, and it is heartening to see Hardik Pandya leading from the front.
