Well, Cricket Australia (CA) might feel hard done by when persistent rain gave us a boredom on Day 1 of the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test. The India vs Australia Test at the Gabba, Brisbane, was marred by torrential rain on Day 1, resulting in a massive financial blow to the hosts.

The continuous downpour on the opening day allowed only 13.2 overs to be bowled, with Australia reaching 0/28 before play was halted. Fans waited for hours, but updates never filled with any hopes of resumption before the news came out and we had an early stumps. It was a shame for spectators, who filled up the entire Gabba Stadium. In fact, the official attendance was 30,145, and fans were subjected to a miserable day with 40mm of rain falling in just one hour.

As per CA’s refund policy, fans are eligible for a full refund if less than 15 overs are bowled. With the Gabba sold out, the refund figure is expected to exceed a staggering ₹8.5 crore. Despite late optimism, play was finally called off at 4:15pm local time (11:45 IST). Notably, CA was just 10 balls away from potentially saving itself over USD 1 million in refunds.
