IND vs AUS: Border-Gavaskar Trophy – After India thrashed Australia by 6 wickets in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in New Delhi, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja engaged in some friendly banter as the young all-rounder mentioned how his fellow left-arm spinner’s streak of wickets is keeping the captain from handing him the ball. Axar paid tribute to Jadeja, who annihilated Australia with a 7-wicket haul on Day 3 of the Delhi Test and has been hosting the Test cricket equivalent of “Chahal TV” during the current Test series. Axar had half-centuries in both Test matches, but he has only bowled a small number of overs and has only one wicket to show for it. Following India’s three-day victory in Dehli, Axar and Jadeja engaged in a lighthearted conversation after the game.

Sir, meri to bowling aa nahi rahi hai. Axar ko bowling nahi dena hai isliye aisa ball dal rahe ho kya? (Sir, are you bowling like this so that Axar doesn’t get a chance to bowl?),” Axar asked Jadeja in a video shared by bcci.tv.

Both of them were startled by the question, but Jadeja responded on a serious note by explaining that when a team is playing on a track like this, the spinner’s responsibility increases.

“They [the Australians] prefer playing the sweep and reverse sweep. My effort was to bowl stump to stump. If they miss and the ball stays low, then the ball is bound to hit the stumps. That’s what happened today when five balls hit the stumps,” Jadeja replied.

Throughout the Test series, Axar has been ramping up his game with the bat, contributing with match-changing hits further down the order. Axar scored a key 74 in the first innings of the Delhi Test, following up on his 84 in the first Test in Nagpur. He had a 114-run stand with Ashwin as the two lower-order batsmen helped India rally from 139 for 7 to record 262 in the first innings.

Jadeja lavished admiration on Axar Patel’s outstanding batting performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, saying: “It’s okay that you are not getting bowl. But when you are batting, it looks like you are batting on a different pitch. It literally feels like there are no demons on the pitch when you are batting. It feels like the Australian bowlers are ordinary when you’re batting and it doesn’t look like the pitch has turn and low bounce.”
