IND vs AUS 5th T20I: Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube remain bench warmers

With the T20 World Cup drawing near, Sundar would be hoping he can get a chance to prove his worth in the South Africa series

India benched all-rounders Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube in the 5th T20I against Australia in Bengaluru. With the series done and dusted, it was expected that India will ring the changes to provide some playing time to the squad players that did not get a chance so far. However, the Indian team had other plans. Sundar and Dube were once again left out of the playing XI as India went for a set team to conclude the series against Australia.

Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube was named in the IND vs AUS T20I squad with a number of seniors being rested after the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. However, both of them will go back from the series without playing a match.

No place for Dube, Sundar

Shivam Dube has been a bench warmer from the start of the series. The 30-year-old all-rounder would definitely be disappointed to not get a single game in the series. But plenty of options in India’s batting line-up meant he had to be contend with getting the India call-up.

Shivam, who plies trade for Chennai Super Kings in Indian Premier League, has played 18 T20Is for India so far. He has scored 152 runs at an average of just over 25. He has six wickets to his name in T20Is, but at a high economy rate of over 9 runs.

Insidesport

Washington Sundar is more experienced than Shivam Dube in terms of experience. However, both shared similar fate in the IND vs AUS T20I series as they will depart without getting featured in a single match. Sundar, who has played 40 T20Is, was kept out of the starting XI by Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel.

The spin duo has taken wickets at regular intervals in the series without conceding a lot of runs. Due to their good form, the team management decided to keep their faith on the Bishnoi and Axar. It resulted in Washington Sundar not getting a look in.
