‘If you were not told who was the debutant..’: Ex-India opener lavishes praise on Akash Deep

IND vs ENG: In his debut Test, fast bowler Akash Deep impressed one and all with his figures of 3/70 in 17 overs.

Team India found a new gem in debutant pacer Akash Deep, who rattled England early on with his three wickets, on the first day of the fourth Test in Ranchi, on Friday. It was due to his efforts, that the visitors were reduced to 57/3 initially, before Joe Root resurrected the innings by scoring a valuable century, with the team ending the day on 302/7.

During a chat on Colors Cineplex, former India opener Aakash Chopra was all praise for the Bengal pacer, who impressed on a wicket that didn’t have much to offer to the bowlers. In fact, for Chopra, Akash Deep out-performed Mohammed Siraj.

“It’s not easy for a fast bowler to make his debut in India. The pace at which he bowled, it didn’t seem like he was making his debut. Somehow you feel that a debutant would have some nerves and if you are bowling with a senior bowler, you remain in his shadow.

“If you were not told who was the debutant between them, you might have said it’s Mohammed Siraj’s debut because the way Akash Deep bowled, he might have been playing always. It speaks volumes.”
