ICC suspends Wanindu Hasaranga for two matches after outburst against umpire

Both players admitted their offences and accepted sanctions proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, negating the need for formal hearings

Sri Lanka’s T20I skipper Wanindu Hasaranga, faces a two-match suspension from international cricket after his outburst against umpires. He slammed the on-field umpires in the third SL vs AFG 3rd T20 after a no-ball controversy in the last over. As a result, he accumulated five demerit points within 24 months, triggering a two-match suspension.

Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel relates to “Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match.”

Found guilty of personal abuse towards an umpire after an international match, Hasaranga incurred a 50 per cent fine and three demerit points, leading to his suspension for Sri Lanka’s first two T20Is against Bangladesh next month. The confrontation occurred post-match when Hasaranga criticized umpire Lyndon Hanibal for a decision.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Rahmanullah Gurbaz also faced penalties, being fined 15 per cent of his match fee for disobeying an umpire’s instruction during the same match. Rahmanullah’s second offence in 24 months led to an additional demerit point, totalling two.

Rahmanullah was found to have breached Article 2.4 of the Code, which relates to “Disobeying an Umpire’s instruction during an International Match.”

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Lyndon Hannibal and Raveendra Wimalasiri, along with third umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge and fourth umpire Ranmore Martinez.

Under the ICC Code of Conduct, Level 2 breaches incur a penalty of 50 to 100 per cent of a player’s match fee and three or four demerit points, while Level 1 breaches result in an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50 per cent of the player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.
