‘Huge disappointment,’ Sunil Gavaskar calls for big changes ahead of T20 WC

‘If mistakes are not accepted, then the progress will be slower, said Sunil Gavaskar after the World Cup debacle.

India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that India Cricket Team must learn from the mistakes it committed during the 50-over World Cup final and take some big steps in order to change things around. Gavaskar has also warned about T20 World Cup 2024 which is seven months away, adding that not winning the title since 2007 is a huge disappointment.

“Trying to show solidarity is one thing, but if mistakes are not accepted, then the progress will be slower. Over the next few weeks, big decisions will have to be made by individuals and the selection committee. India not winning the T20 World Cup after 2007 is a huge disappointment considering the exposure its players and youngsters get playing in the IPL,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Mid-Day.

World Cup

It must be mentioned that team India has been the most consistent team in the last decade. The Men in Blue were unbeaten at the 2015 World Cup before losing to Australia in the semifinal. In the 2019 World Cup, India lost only one group-stage match before losing to New Zealand in the semi-finals.

Team India also reached the final match of the T20 World Cup in 2014 as they lost to Sri Lanka. In 2016, India was defeated by West Indies at the T20 World Cup semi-final. Team India also played in the final match of the 2013 Champions Trophy and also reached the finals of the World Test Championship twice. However, the cricketing giant failed to lift the trophy every single time.

Not winnings WC was disappointing: Gavaskar

Meanwhile, Gavaskar appreciated the performance of Team India and is confident that with time, the players will move on from the disappointing results and come out stronger.

“India not winning the World Cup was disappointing, no doubt, but that is over now, and the game will move on. Over the last four World Cups, the Indian team entered the final twice with one win and got into the semi-finals on the other two occasions. That is a terrific performance when you compare it with the other teams, and only Australia have been better with two trophy wins,” pointed out Gavaskar.
