Howler from Harbhajan Singh as he predicts 3 teams from same ICC Champions Trophy group to play semis

The ICC Champions Trophy match between India and Pakistan will be played on February 23 in Dubai.

Absolutely poor analysis by Harbhajan Singh! His recent prediction for the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals left many cricket fans scratching their heads. Claiming that Australia, India, and New Zealand would make it to the semi-finals might sound like a solid pick at first, but there’s one glaring problem—it’s simply not possible under the tournament’s format.

Awful prediction by Harbhajan Singh

In a recent interaction with CricTracker, Harbhajan Singh chose India, Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia as his favourites to qualify for the knockouts of the ICC Champions Trophy. He spoke, “Australia and India. But you cannot take out Pakistan from such competitions and also New Zealand. So these will be the four semi-finalists according to me.”

Let’s break down the problem: the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has two groups, with only the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. In Group A, where India, Pakistan and New Zealand play, only two teams can qualify. So how could three teams from the same group make it? The math isn’t mathing here! While Australia can surely qualify from their “group of death”, they need another team to follow. That could be just one from the likes of England, South Africa, and Afghanistan.

For someone like Harbhajan, who’s one of the best-ever bowlers India has ever produced and analysing cricket at the highest level, this kind of mistake feels disappointing. Fans and aspiring analysts look up to him for accurate insights and expert analysis. But it was a proper gaffe by the legend, who has himself played 13 matches in the prestigious competition.
